Cardiff Met 0-1 Aberystwyth Town: Jon Owen strike lifts Aber out of relegation zone

Aberystwyth Town lifted themselves out of the drop zone and brought Cardiff Met into it after they won 1-0 at Cyncoed Campus.

John Owen’s 10th-minute strike was the only goal in a game that was lacking in quality in the South Wales capital.

Aber earn back-to-back wins for the first time this season whilst Met remain winless in five league matches and suffered their fourth consecutive defeat.

Aberystwyth’s goal was a fine attacking move that involved their strike pair and was rounded off by a good finish. Mathew Jones won possession in midfield, before Owen and Raul Correia exchanged a pass before ultimately Jack Rimmer put in a delicious cross to recipient Owen to flick a header home.

A big call for referee Thomas Owen to make was a penalty appeal from Aber. Raul Correia went down in the box and was instead booked for simulation on the half-hour mark.

The hosts didn’t create many chances to trouble Gregor Zabret for an equaliser but they almost found one. Eliot Evans laid in Matt Chubb who hit the crossbar when trying to find Adam Roscrow.

Aberystwyth moved for a second and Harry Franklin had two opportunities. His first shot was a scooped shot on the edge of the box which ended up on the roof of the net. His second effort was a low-volley that was hit straight at Alex Lang.

Franklin was the driving force in Aberystwyth’s attacks and in the second half went closest to an insurance goal. Inside the box, he tried to curl home a shot but Lang tipped his shot wide.

In search of an equaliser, they almost found it through a familiar face to Aber. Former midfielder Tom Price from 25-yards out sent a low shot just past the post.

Chasing a late goal, Met were presented with a chance on the edge on the box from a foul. Harry Owen was unable though to make something from it as he drove it into the wall, ending the night frustrated.
