Guy Handscombe and Corwen agree to part company

Corwen and their first-team manager Guy Handscombe have agreed to mutually part company.

He was appointed back in April 2021, succeeding Nick Jones and leaves the club in the eighth position in the Ardal North East.

The Denbighshire based club were relegated from the Cymru North in 2019/20 on a points-per-game basis and promotion back to the second tier will have been an objective this season.

With more than half the season gone, however, Corwen are 13 points off of leaders Llanfair United and 12 off a play-off spot, currently occupied by Chirk AA after a run of four games without a win.

The news was announced by Handscombe this evening: “This evening Corwen and I have decided to part ways.

“Unfortunately, the brief I had in pre-season can’t be carried forward and there are many reasons as to why things haven’t worked out as I would have liked.

“I’d like to thank Ian Evans and his family for making me feel welcome and I wish everyone associated with the club all the best for the future.”

This was his first job in senior management after mainly working as an assistant manager or coach to numerous bosses.

Before joining Corwen, he was an assistant to Chris Hardy at Ruthin Town.

Handscombe was also at Llandudno, Llanrwst United and Porthmadog, which has seen him involved in more than 300 games.

It is understood that his standing down will not affect his commitments to the Regions Cup with the identification of eligible players a priority.

Handscombe was appointed as manager of a Cymru North select which will face a Cymru South over two legs for the right to represent Wales in the UEFA Regions Cup against Sweden, Northern Ireland and the Czech Republic.

As well as Handscombe’s departure, Corwen have had to deal with a ground move during the season. They had to leave the War Memorial Park over not being able to use dressing rooms at the facility. Corwen now has to play 12-miles away at Bala Town’s Maes Tegid.
