The former Rhyl defender who is competing at the Africa Cup of Nations

The festival of football in the African content is well underway with the Africa Cup of Nations in full swing.

You have to go far to find a link between Welsh domestic and the competition, but there is one at least.

Ibou Touray, who represents Gambia, was previously on the books of Rhyl before making the move into the professional game.

He would join the club at the same time as the likes of Jake Eyre, Paul Mooney, and Ben Maher, as well as playing alongside former Wrexham manager Dean Keates. 

Since leaving Belle Vue, he has gone on to have multiple success with Salford City, who are owned by the Class of 92, with Wales manager Ryan Giggs a shareholder.

He won the National League North with them in his first season and then the National League, winning back-to-back promotions.

Touray has since cemented his place in the Ammies’ backline, making more than 100 appearances in the Football League.

Now he’s lining up on the international stage for the Gambia who he qualifies through his father. He has represented them since 2015 and made his debut whilst playing for the Welsh side.

His side are in action against Maurtania in their opening group stage match at 16.00 pm.

Later this week they will play Mali who have some superstars in their ranks. Southampton’s Moussa Djenepo, as well as Yves Bissouma from Brighton & Hove Albion amongst their ranks. 

They conclude the group stage with a match against Tunisia as they hope to progress to the knockout stages of the competition. 

Alec Mudimu, formerly of the Cefn Druids is also at the competition.

Mudimu, now playing his football in Georgia for Torpedo Kutaisi, represents Zimbabwe. 

He was an unused substitute in their 1-0 defeat to Senegal in which Sadio Mane scored.
