Cardiff Metropolitan University’s Matthew Chubb was unsure of his future in the game towards the end of last season.
With a departure from Met and stopping playing altogether both possibilities, the right-back, with the help of manager Christian Edwards, made a huge impression in Phase Two.
Having cemented his place in the side, Chubb expressed that he was convinced to stay on by manager Edwards, a decision which has certainly paid off.
“Towards the end of last season, it went really well for me. I wasn’t expecting it at the time, but I managed to get some game time and kicked on.
“I wasn’t sure whether I was going to keep playing this season, I thought it could have been my last season last year, but I spoke to the manager and he said that he wanted me to stay on for another year at least.
“I thought I’d give it a go and hope the extra year would go well; it has so far and I’m really enjoying my football.”
The Archers will begin their Phase Two campaign by welcoming Connah’s Quay Nomads to Cyncoed Campus.
Edwards’ side are currently in seventh position, with hopes of securing a place in the play-offs.
Despite a tough start to the season, Chubb feels that Met have improved throughout the campaign.
“It’s one of those things were we didn’t know where we were going to end up,” he began.
“We didn’t start the season off well against Flint, it was a shocker of a start for us. We played Ammanford beforehand and played well in that game, so it was tough to take.
“Other than that and the result we had against TNS where we conceded five, it’s been a solid start for us to the season defensively, but now, it’s about adding goals to our game in Phase Two.”
Cardiff Met’s remaining fixtures this season will be the last for manager Edwards, after he announced he will be standing down at the end of the campaign.
The Archers boss has done an incredibly job at the club, securing numerous promotions and a place in European competition.
With the play-offs a clear aim for the side this campaign, Chubb insisted that the whole squad are keen to ensure Edwards ends his tenure on a high.
“I’ve got a great relationship with him. He’s made me the player I am in terms of knowing my role both in attack and defence. What’s great about him is that he shapes your personality as well. He’s definitely done that for me.
“He’s done so much for the club. It was a shame we couldn’t win the Nathaniel MG Cup final. It was a mental penalty shootout, but it was disappointing that we couldn’t win it for him, because that’s what we all wanted to do.
“Like he always says, there’s no time to stop and show emotion, we’ve got to go again, keep playing as well as we can and hopefully make him proud.”
