Former Wrexham defender appointed manager of the Cefn Druids

Former Wrexham defender Neil Ashton has returned to the Cefn Druids and will manage them for the 2022/23 JD Cymru North season.

The 37-year-old has been handed a two-year contract by the Ancients and will be tasked with leading the club back to the Cymru Premier.

Ashton had been at Llandudno for the 2021/22 season as a player and made 15 appearances for the Seasiders across all competitions.

Commenting on his appointment, Ashton said to the official club website: “I’m very happy to be given the opportunity to manage a club I’ve had such great times with, and hope I can replicate those days as manager.”

Druids Chairman Des Williams said: “I’m absolutely delighted to confirm the appointment of Neil Ashton as our new manager.

Neil and I share the same values and drive for success at the club and, for me personally, he is someone I have the utmost faith in and trust to restore us back to the top tier of football in Wales”

He will succeed Andy Turner, who took caretaker charge of the club from Niall McGuinness back in September.

Former Tottenham Hotspur man Turner will revert back to his full-time role as Head of Coaching.

As a player, Ashton made 204 appearances for Wrexham between 2010 and 2015, having ben signed by Dean Saunders.

He was once named Player of the Year and won the FA Trophy in March 2013.

In 2017, he moved to the Cefn Druids, working alongside Huw Griffiths, helping them qualify for the Europa League, where they narrowly lost to FK Trakai.
