Newtown prize away Theo Wharton from Barry Town for undisclosed fee

Newtown have made their third signing of the summer after paying a fee for Barry Town United midfielder Theo Wharton.
Wharton joins them in time for their preparations for their Conference League qualifier against HB Torshavn.
The 27-year-old had initially agreed to stay with the Linnets after their relegation to the Cymru South and penned a new deal but after interest from Newtown, has chosen to leave.
He was part of the travelling contingent that made the trip across the Irish Sea as Newtown take on NIFL Premiership winners Linfield at Windsor Park, home of the Northern Ireland national team.
In a statement released by selling club Barry, they said: “We can confirm that Theo Wharton has today joined Newtown Football Club for an undisclosed fee.
“Theo had signed a two-year contract with the club but had made it clear his desire to depart us following Newtown’s approach and offer.
“All at the club would like to thank Theo for his time with us and wish him the very best of luck.”
Wharton joined Barry from Hereford in January 2020 and had spent two-and-a-half seasons at Jenner Park.
He made 72 appearances in total in the Cymru Premier and scored two goals, as well as playing in a Europa League qualifier.
Wharton is the third signing of the summer after signing Mathew Jones from Aberystwyth Town and Louis Robles from The New Saints.
Jones was the first addition and joined after opting to leave Aber after playing the last five seasons at Park Avenue.
The 22-year-old made 132 league appearances in total, scoring 13 goals and also got three assists last season.
Robles meanwhile rejected a new contract with The New Saints to put pen-to-paper on a deal with the Robins.
The 25-year-old played 30 times for TNS last season, scoring twice as his goals helped them win the league title.
A season before that he scored 12 goals in 25 games after joining from Bala Town where he struck the back of the net 11 times in 24 games.
As well as incomings, there has also been a departure with James Davies departing for Maes Tegid.
Wales C international Naim Arsan is also believed to be on trial with Colin Caton’s side.
