Llantwit Major 1-2 Trefelin BGC – Champions suffer opening day defeat

Defending champions Llantwit Major suffered defeat on the opening day of the season to Trefelin BGC who came from behind to win.

Joel Woodington got the first goal for the Major to give the Champions the lead after just 7 minutes. Mark Jones levelled for Trefelin at the 37-minute mark sending the sides into halftime level. It was substitute Mason Jones-Thomas who got what was the winning goal after 65 minutes.

Llantwit with several players missing began the defence of their title with a loss. Trefelin continue their good start with a league win after a win in last week’s Nathaniel MG Cup match over Goytre United.


The visitors had the games first chance as Damon Thomas’ quick ball found Roan Piper. Piper gave the ball back to Thomas who went for goal forcing Llantwit keeper Rhys Jones to push over the bar.

Trefelin soon had Llantwit scrambling as their corner into the six yard box was poked towards goal. Nathan Evans in a good position to clear off the line.

Despite the visitors having the best of the opening exchanges Llantwit took an early lead. Trefelin keeper Chris Curtis playing a poor pass that was picked up by Matthew Kimmins who played the ball into Josh Morgan. Morgan squared the ball to a waiting Joel Woodington who fired into the net for his first goal of the season.

Damon Thomas almost levelled a minute later shooting just over from the edge of the box.

Mark Jones went close heading over at the back post after a good cross from Michael Waters.

Steve Berry sent too long on the ball and allowed Kimmins to take it. Kimmins played the ball to Josh Morgan who set up Rob Jones. Jones put his effort wide.

Roan Piper tried to curl a free kick into the net. He was able to get it around the wall but it was too close to Rhys Jones.

Trefelin were getting closer to levelling the game, Rhys Jones needing to to make the save from Steve Berry after a good ball in from Tomlinson. Soon after Trefelin had the ball back in the box and Mark Jones fired in to make it 1-1.

Half Time: Llantwit 1-1 Trefelin.

Trefelin began the second half on the front foot. Mark Jones heading over from Piper’s nod down after a cross from Damon Thomas.

Llantwit came back with Woodington firing a shot straight at Chris Curtis.

Jordan Davies showed great vison with a clever ball over the Llantwit defence that found sub Mason Jones-Thomas. With Rhys Jones out of his goal Jones-Thomas hit a subline chip over the keeper to make it 2-1.

Llantwit tried to get back into the game and a chance from a free kick. Owain Edwards took it but his effort was well off target.

Joel Woodington found Ben Cripps in the box after good work on the left. Before Cripps had the chance to shot Curtis was out and diving at his feet to take the ball.

Trefelin almost put the game beyond Llantwit when Joseph Jones sent a header on to the bar after a scramble in the Llantwit box.

Olli Bradley almost caught out Curtis when his cross went close to dipping under the crossbar.
