Barry Town United have strengthened its front-line further by prizing away Samuel Johnson from Pontypridd United.

He is the second player to make the move from the Dragons to Jenner Park, following in the footsteps of last season’s captain Aiden Lewis.

The 25-year-old has opted to help get Barry promoted from the Cymru South rather than play in the Cymru Premier under Andrew Stokes.

Johnson was not included in Ponty’s match-day squad in the 2-0 win over Carmarthen United in the Nathaniel MG Cup last Saturday.

He was a huge part however last season of helping Pontypridd finish second, which allowed them to be promoted in the place of Llantwit Major.

Johnson netted 25 goals across all competitions last season, playing in 35 matches including five goals in the last six games of the previous season with a brace on the final day at Carmarthen.

He had previous spells at Taffs Well, Cambrian, Goytre United, and Ely Rangers.

His goal-scoring exploits saw him earn a call-up by former Ponty boss Jonathan Jones in a Cymru South representative XI.

He could make his debut in Friday evening’s home fixture when Barry welcome title rivals Briton Ferry Llansawel to a newly-laid pitch at Jenner Park Stadium.

Gavin Chesterfield and his team have been busy in the market with Johnson now the 11th arrival as they hope to bounce back immediately from their relegation.

Last week, they signed former Carmarthen, Ponty, and Penybont defender Lewis Baldwin following a stint in America.

That was in addition to the arrivals of; Lewis, Drew Fahiya, Cameron Clarke, Rhys Davies, Gavin Beddard, Troy Greening, Liam Walsh, and Josh Graham.

Barry are seventh in the league table at the minute, bouncing back from their opening day defeat to Ammanford with a mid-week win over Afan Lido last week.
