As-it-happened: Cardiff Corinthians 1-8 Newtown – JD Welsh Cup

Cardiff Corinthians host Newtown of the JD Cymru Premier at the Riverside Ground in Round Two of the Welsh Cup

It is being described as the ‘biggest game in 25 years’’ according to a post from their official club twitter account, as they host Mid-Wales-based Newtown in the second round of the FAW Welsh Cup.

The former two-time winners of the Welsh Cup are currently struggling sitting 11th in the Cymru Premier with just eight points from nine games so far this season, only bettering that of newly promoted Airbus UK. The Premier Division side have failed to win in their last four despite having the second top goal scorer in the league Aaron Williams. The ex-Peterborough and Walsall star already has seven to his name this season, adding to his successful 17-goal campaign in The Robins’ surge to third last season.

On the opposite end of the spectrum and 36 places lower in the Welsh domestic tier system, The Corries are enjoying their time sitting in third n the South Wales Alliance Football League Premier Division.

The hosts for the upcoming game have lost just one match in their season so far which has included three wins already in the Welsh Cup and two wins in the FAW Amateur Trophy

Despite Newtown’s superior experience in this stage of the competition, they suffered a similar, albeit less dramatic defeat in this competition last year when they departed to Carmarthen Town on penalties in the third round.

After already coming through Royal Stars and Llwydcoed in the qualifying rounds and Treowen Stars in the first round proper, the Corries players and supporters will be quietly confident as underdogs based on their current form having not conceded in the competition so far and scoring 54 goals in just 12 matches in all competitions this season, including 32 of those in the last four matches.

The namesake combination of Chris Quick and Worsley have been the ones to watch this season for the underdogs, both with nine goals on their tally this season.
