Haverfordwest humbled and Cardiff Met suffer bitter Pill – Welsh Cup round-up

Haverfordwest County, Cardiff Met, and Taffs Well were victims of Welsh Cup upsets as they fell to defeats to Trethomas Bluebird, Pill YMCA, and Hakin United.

Tony Pennock’s side was the last match of the day after a double-header earlier between Risca United and Penybont at Ystrad Mynach.

Jack Wilson opened the scoring for the Caerphilly-based Bluebirds in the 17th minute but Levi Rees equalised in the 30th minute.

Rees then became the hero in stoppage time as after receiving the ball on the edge of the box, he placed it into the corner beating a rooted Lee Idzi to help the Ardal South East side through.

Pill of the Gwent Premier Division claimed arguably the biggest upset of the round by beating Cardiff Met.

Lewis Sommers opened the scoring at Pill Harriers Sports Club in the first-half before Lewis Rees equalised in the second.

A 72nd-minute penalty from Ben Lawrence however saw the Newport-based side knockout the Archers.

Meanwhile Hakin – the lowest-ranked team left in the competition – play in the Pembrokeshire League which is the fifth tier of Welsh football and are one of the most successful teams in the region.

The Mighty Vikings comfortably beat the Wellmen who are battling in the top half of the Cymru South.

Number nine Ashley Bevan opened the scoring but David Lyon issued a response just before the half-hour mark.

Before the hour, Nicky Woodrow restored Hakin’s lead and then Shane Walsh along with substitute Justin Harding inflicted further damage for a 4-1 win.

Managerless Swansea University were another team to suffer defeat to lower-league opposition.

Penydarren – quarter-finalists in 2016 – bounced back from George Sellick’s opening goal to win 2-1 thanks to second-half goal from George Kabza and an 86th-minute penalty from Alex Long.

As for the largest crowd of the afternoon, Aber Valley hosted six-time Welsh Cup winners Barry Town United in front of a crowd of 921.

Sam Johnson, Kayne McLaggon, and Jordan Cotterill all scored without a response until Scott Armitage scored a penalty three minutes from time.

There were near upsets for Aberystwyth Town and The New Saints too, requiring penalties to beat Pencoed Athletic and Chirk.

The Seasiders failed to breach the South Wales Alliance League sides goal in an goalless draw but Jack Thorn, Niall Flint, Jon Owen and Harry Arnison successfully converted their spot-kicks to send Aber through.

At Holyhead Road, Chirk took a 51st-minute lead through Ryan Davies, scoring the first goal of the game. Declan McManus also missed a penalty but Keston Davies made amends three minutes later.

Adrian Cieslewicz, Adam Wilson, Jon Routledge and Ryan Brobbel converted their penalties but Adam Williams and Dale Davies was the unfortunate men to miss theirs.
