As-it-happened: Newtown 0-1 Cardiff Met – JD Cymru Premier

Cardiff Met Uni had Lewis Rees to thank in a hard fought victory over Newtown at Latham Park.

The striker latched onto a ball with just moments remaining in the first half, to bag what would be the deciding goal in the Cymru Premier League clash.

Newtown never got going in the first 45 minutes. Apart from a few set-pieces, the hosts didn’t have any real threat for Cardiff Met to deal with.

The Robins started to go more direct with their play in the second half, in an effort to pile more pressure on Cardiff Met Uni.

However it was Cardiff Met who continued to have the best chances, in a game where they could’ve scored three or four.

Harry Owen had one of the best chances in the second half, after being played through by Sam Jones, who had an excellent game.

Owen was one-on-one with goalkeeper Dave Jones, however the goalkeeper blocked the effort, to keep the score 0-1.

Newtown kept fighting, putting more pressure on the Cardiff backline in the closing stages, as was expected.

The home side started getting frustrated, with yellow cards in the closing stages after a brawl broke out with seconds remaining.

Cardiff Met Uni would see out the win away from home, to remain in the top half.

Newtown remain in the bottom half, and are now nine points off the top three, where they finished last season.
