EFL Championship side Burnley have signed Penybont winger Tom Tweedy for a transfer fee ahead of Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
The 18-year-old has come through Penybont’s academy system and has graduated into the seniors this season in what has been his breakthrough campaign. Tweedy has made 16 appearances across all competitions with one goal in the Cymru Premier which came against Caernarfon Town.
Tweedy will link up with the Clarets’ age grade teams, which could involve either the Under-18 or the Under-21s, and are a Category Two academy. Burnley’s senior manager is Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany at the helm, and former Wales captain Craig Bellamy as the assistant manager.
He has joined on an 18-month contract with his deal set to expire in the summer of 2024.
“This is a really proud moment for me and my family as I join a Club like Burnley,” said Tweedy to the official club website.
“It’s the right time and the right place for me to come now, and I know this will be somewhere I can progress in my career.
“There are some really great people at the Club I’ve already met in my short time here over the last few days, and I just can’t wait to get going now out on the pitch.”
First-team manager Rhys Griffiths said: “Whilst we’re disappointed to lose Tom, we’re thrilled he’s got this opportunity. I’m proud of our academy and development system. It shows that as a club we take developing players very seriously and our academy structure works.”
In the current campaign, He started one match in the league and has come on as a substitute a total of 13 times. He was not included in Penybont’s match-day squad in their 3-0 win over Newtown last Saturday with the move being finalised. Tweedy’s last involvement at senior level for the club was coming on as a substitute in a 2-0 win over Gresford Athletic in the Round of 16 in the Welsh Cup.
