Barry Town 5-0 Pontardawe Town: Classy performance as Barry Crowned Champions

Barry Town were crowned JD Cymru South Champions after a 5-0 win over Pontardawe at Jenner Park. Kayne McLaggon scored a hat trick as he led Barry back to the JD Cymru Premier.

Barry made a flying start and McLaggon put them ahead after six minutes. The Linnets kept pushing forward and Josh Bull continued his good goalscoring run adding the second on 13 minutes. Chris Hugh made it three in the 18th minute before McLaggon added the fourth 38 minutes in. McLaggon completed his hat trick in the 67th minute to round off a good day for Barry.

Barry have confirmed their first place finish and promotion to the Cymru Premier. Pontardawe drop to 14th place and now only three points clear of Swansea Uni.

Barry had the perfect start to the game taking the lead in the sixth minute. Jordan Cotterill taking a short corner to McLaggon , who was in space on the edge of the box. The Barry captain hitting a shot past Steven Reeve.

Chris Hugh got forward to help in attack and his low ball across the goal caused problems as Iwan Batcup had to hack out.

Barry continued to press and Aiden Lewis sent a sublime pass behind the Pontardawe defence that found the run of Josh Bull. In on goal Bull made no mistake as he slide the ball past Reeve for 2-0.

McLaggon received the ball in the box and held off Pontardawe defenders before turning and shooting across goal. Chris Hugh sliding in at the back post turning the ball in for Barry’s third.

Rhys Davies almost made it four but his header from Chris Hugh’s corner went just over the bar.

Before half time Barry made it four. Chris Hugh this time providing a quality ball to find McLaggon who fired his second past Reeve.

Pontardawe came out in the second half quick and almost pulled a goal back. Lewis Reed curling the ball towards the bottom corner form the edge of the box but Mike Lewis with a superb dive to push past the post.

Chris Hugh had the chance for a second but his powerful shot flashed over the cross bar.

Barry kept looking for more goals and both Jordan Cotterill and Josh Bull saw their shots blocked in quick secession.

Hugh and McLaggon combined again for Barry’s fifth. A delightful ball across the box from Hugh was met by McLaggon who fired in for his hat trick and his 29th Cymru South goal.

Callum Huggins came on for McLaggon and almost got himself on the scoresheet. Chris Hugh again with a fine pass to find Huggins but his shot was saved by Reeve.

Hugh then almost added a second himself with a low drive across goal that went just wide.
