Cymru Premier newcomers Cambrian United have completed their second signing of the summer, securing the services of former Hull City and Yeovil Town midfielder Alex John.
The 25-year-old joins the Cam Army as they prepare for their first-ever season in the Cymru Premier following promotion from the Cymru South last campaign.
John arrives at Clydach Vale after spending five years with Merthyr Town, where he established himself as a key figure in midfield. His experience in the English non-league system and professional academy background is expected to add quality and depth to Cambrian United’s squad ahead of their historic top-flight debut.
“Coming back to Cambrian is a really proud moment for me,” said John after his return to the Rhondda was confirmed.
“This is where my football journey started, and it’s great to be returning at such an exciting time for the club.
“The ambition around the club is clear to see, and the opportunity to play in the Cymru Premier was something that really appealed to me. I can’t wait to get started, meet the supporters and help the team have a successful season.”
The move marks another important step in the club’s preparations for life in the Welsh top flight as they continue to strengthen their squad for the challenges that lie ahead. He becomes their second signing following the arrival of Jake Morris from Cardiff Met.
Alex John’s career, including Hull City and Yeovil Town spells
John is no stranger to Cambrian United, having previously come through the club’s academy before earning a move to Swansea City AFC at Under-13 level.
His breakthrough in senior football came with Yeovil Town after joining the club in 2019, where he gained valuable first-team experience. During his time at Huish Park, he also enjoyed a loan spell with Gosport Borough as he continued his development in senior football.
Hull City were reportedly forced to fend off interest from several Premier League clubs to secure John’s signature on loan from Yeovil Town in 2020.
The midfielder was immediately integrated into the Tigers’ Under-23s setup, with the move viewed as a significant step in his development following his breakthrough into senior football at Yeovil.
John returned to Wales in 2021 and went on to make 174 appearances for Merthyr Town, scoring nine goals during a highly successful spell at Penydarren Park.
The midfielder played a key role in the club’s Southern League Premier South title-winning campaign and remained a regular presence as the Martyrs stepped up to the National League North last season.
In the league, John made 37 appearances, split evenly between 18 starts and 19 appearances from the bench. He contributed two assists and scored once, underlining his value as a dependable option in the middle of the park.
It was announced in late May that John would be leaving Penydarren Park, with the midfielder bidding farewell to the club after his departure was confirmed.
“It’s been a pleasure to represent this club for five years,” he said in a post on X.
“I’ve made amazing memories & friendships. Thanks to the players, staff & fans for making my time here so enjoyable.
“Wishing everyone at Merthyr all the best next season. I’ll be back to support the boys whenever I can, UTT.”

Cambrian United’s current state-of-play
The club fought hard to secure John’s signature, revealing there had been “significant” interest from several other clubs. Cambrian United manager Liam Williams, a long-time admirer of the midfielder, expressed his delight at finally bringing him to the club.
“Alex is a player we’ve admired for a long time,” admitted Williams.
“He brings quality, experience and a real understanding of what it means to represent this area.
“There was strong interest in Alex from elsewhere, so we’re delighted he has chosen Cambrian.
“He’s another player who will add real quality to the squad as we prepare for the challenges of the Cymru Premier.”
Cambrian have also worked hard to retain several key members of last season’s promotion-winning squad. Chief among them is Liam Eason, who is set to take his first steps in the Cymru Premier. With 33 goal involvements last term, he has established himself as one of the Cymru South’s standout performers in recent seasons. Now, he will have the opportunity to showcase his talents on the national stage.
Players’ Player of the Season Cam Strinati has also committed to the club for the upcoming campaign. He missed just four matches last season and was a vital creative force, contributing nine assists while also finding the net twice.
