Ardal South East table predicted with Cwmbran Town, Chepstow, and Goytre verdicts

The new Ardal South East season promises to be one of the most competitive in recent memory, with familiar heavyweights, ambitious challengers and intriguing newcomers all believing they can stake a claim for promotion.

With 16 teams competing, the stakes are clear. The champions will earn automatic promotion, while second place secures a shot at the play-offs. At the other end of the table, three clubs will face relegation, meaning there is little room for error across the campaign.

Despite the heartbreak of last season, Welsh bookmaker DragonBet have placed Cwmbran Town as deserved favourites at 2/1.

Their near miss still lingers. The Crows finished just one point shy of the title before suffering a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Pontardawe Town in the promotion play-off final at the end of May, denying them a place in Tier Two.

The summer has brought significant change. A new manager has taken the reins, tasked with taking the club that final step after last season’s agonising finish.

Perhaps the headline-grabbing move of the summer has been the arrival of Swansea City legend Lee Trundle. While no longer at the peak of his playing career, Trundle’s quality, experience and profile make him one of the division’s standout signings. His influence, both on and off the pitch, could prove invaluable in a league often decided by fine margins.

Just behind the favourites are Goytre at 5/2, with plenty of intrigue surrounding the club following a busy summer.

Following Marc Ingles’ departure back to Chepstow Town, Eston Chiverton has taken charge and wasted little time reshaping the squad.

Goytre have recruited heavily from local rivals, bringing in players from both Cwmbran Town and Cwmbran Celtic. Former Crows striker Jack Pewtner adds attacking options, while the arrivals of Bo Cordle, Jordan Carey and Cohen Riella from South West side Canton suggest the club are looking beyond the local market to strengthen further.

The squad has undergone significant changes, but the quality appears to remain. Whether they can gel quickly enough to sustain a title challenge remains the biggest question.

At 4/1, Chepstow Town are viewed as genuine contenders, and it’s easy to understand why.

The return of Marc Ingles late last season always hinted that changes would follow, and he has immediately reunited with several players he previously managed at Goytre.

Most notably, last season’s leading scorer Chris Ham has followed his former manager to Chepstow. Goals are often the difference between competing and merely challenging, and Ham’s proven record gives Chepstow one of the division’s biggest attacking threats.

Two clubs sit at 6/1 and could easily upset the favourites

Cwmbran Celtic are priced at 6/1 following their relegation from the Cymru South, and they will be hoping for an immediate return to the higher level. Having competed in the division above last season, Celtic bring plenty of experience and will be among the sides expected to challenge near the top of the table.

Relegation will undoubtedly have been disappointing, but the club will see this as an opportunity to rebuild and push for promotion straight away. They have lost several players during the summer, including some who have moved to local rivals.

Newport Corinthians enter the season with momentum after winning the Gwent Premier League title by a single point. Promotion-winning confidence often carries into a new campaign, although adapting to the demands of the Ardal South East will be their biggest challenge.

Caldicot Town (8/1) and Undy Athletic (10/1) complete what many would consider the leading contenders. Both clubs possess enough experience to compete towards the top and will hope consistency can bridge the gap to the promotion places.

Dark Horses

Croesyceiliog (12/1) and both Blaenavon Blues and Risca United (14/1) are all priced as outsiders with realistic ambitions of pushing into the top half.

Further back, Abergavenny Town, Brecon Corries and newly-promoted New Inn are all available at 16/1. New Inn arrive with the confidence that comes from promotion and will hope to establish themselves quickly in their first season at this level.

Tredegar Town (28/1), Abercarn United (33/1) and Lliswerry (33/1) are considered outsiders by the bookmakers, thus favourites for relegation.

Lliswerry, however, are an interesting proposition. Former Carmarthen Town player Kyle Bassett takes charge for the new campaign, and while expectations are modest, a fresh approach could help the club outperform their odds.

Prediction

On paper, Cwmbran Town remain the team to beat. The disappointment of last season should only strengthen their resolve, and the addition of Lee Trundle gives them an extra dimension in key moments.

Chepstow Town appear best placed to challenge if Marc Ingles can quickly rebuild the chemistry he enjoyed at Goytre, while Goytre themselves remain a serious threat despite the managerial change.

Expect Newport Corinthians to surprise a few teams, while New Inn could prove more competitive than their odds suggest.
