Stockport County defender makes transfer exit to top-flight club amid EFL interest as Man United example provided

Connah’s Quay have strengthened their squad with the signing of former Stockport County defender Rhys Watson, who departs Edgeley Park this summer.

Watson joins the Nomads after impressing during a pre-season trial against Hednesford Town. The 19-year-old is understood to have attracted interest from EFL clubs but has opted for a move to the Cymru Premier, Wales’ top flight, in search of regular first-team football.

A 10-time Wales U19 international, Watson has continued to represent his country at youth level, most recently featuring in the June international camp against Qatar and Sweden. The centre-back made his Wales U19 debut last September, where he lined up alongside Leeds United defender Jayden Lienou. He was later called up to the Wales senior squad this summer, although he was not included in the U19 squad for the UEFA EURO U19 Championship, which was hosted across North Wales.

The defender leaves Stockport County having made three senior appearances for the Hatters. He featured in the EFL Cup during the 2024/25 campaign before making two appearances in the EFL Trophy last season.

The centre-back made his competitive debut in a 2-1 defeat to Caernarfon Town on the opening weekend of the Cymru Premier, playing the full 90 minutes.

Manager John Disney believes Rhys’ understanding of the pathway at Connah’s Quay Nomads was a key factor in the club securing his signature, with the manager highlighting the opportunities available to young players who make the move into a senior football environment.

Speaking to the official club website, Disney said: “Rhys is someone that I have had an eye on since the end of last season and although Rhys was in over the summer at several EFL clubs he understands the opportunity that playing in a senior environment brings.

“He is exactly the profile of player that we are looking to sign and boost our full-time model whilst also having a real desire of doing well individually whilst also helping the club continually develop.”

The Nomads boss believes the club’s recent track record of helping young players progress is a major attraction, with the Cymru Premier providing a platform for emerging talent to gain valuable first-team experience.

Kit Margetson’s successful loan spell from Swansea City last season is a prime example of that pathway in action. The goalkeeper impressed during his time in the Cymru Premier, earning recognition at international level with Wales Under-21s before securing a move to Premier League giants Manchester United.

Jacob Cook, who also arrived on loan from Swansea, benefited from regular senior football during his time with the Nomads. The experience proved valuable for the midfielder, who was playing away from South Wales for the first time, and he returned to his hometown club having signed new terms after a successful campaign on both a personal and professional level.

Disney added: “Rhys has trained with us for the last few weeks and impressed us as one of the trialists from the weekend’s game against Hednesford, and we are delighted that he and his family have decided to continue his development with ourselves at Connah’s Quay Nomads ahead of the season starting.

“It highlights the progress we continue to make as a club that he is aware of Kit Margetson and Jacob Cook’s international call-ups for the Welsh youth teams, and we are confident he can be the next player for us to represent Wales in those next camps.”

For Disney, Rhys’ arrival is another example of the club’s ambition to provide talented young players with the environment, support and first-team opportunities needed to continue their development, while also strengthening the Nomads’ hybrid model ahead of the new season.
