Penybont: Former Plymouth Argyle, West Brom, and Boavista winger signs

Penybont have signed Danny Barrow, with the former West Bromwich Albion youngster joining the Bridgend club to add further experience to their Cymru Premier squad.
The 30-year-old, who has represented Wales at youth level, arrives back in Welsh football after a career which has taken him from the academies of Plymouth Argyle and West Brom to the United States, Portugal, Sweden and Finland.
Barrow was born in Braunton but has Welsh eligibility and was called up by Wales as a teenager.
He featured for Wales Under-16 and Under-17 sides, including the memorable 4-0 Victory Shield win over England at Haverfordwest. He also appeared for Wales at the UEFA Under-17 European Championship qualifiers.
From Plymouth to West Brom
Barrow began his football education with Plymouth Argyle before moving to West Brom’s academy in 2011.
His progress at The Hawthorns brought opportunities to train with the first team during the club’s Premier League years. He remained with West Brom through to his late teens before moving into senior football.
A career which took him around the world
Barrow’s first senior moves came in 2015, when he spent time with Bath City and Truro City.
He then made the move across the Atlantic, joining Jacksonville Armada in 2015 before playing for North Carolina FC in 2017.
Portugal was next. Barrow joined Boavista’s B side in 2018 and later spent time with Pedras Rubras, continuing a career which had already taken him a long way from the traditional route through the English pyramid.
Sweden followed, with spells at IFK Berga, Oskarshamns AIK and Husqvarna.
Barrow then moved to Finland, joining AC Oulu in 2023. He made more than 40 appearances for the club across his time there, according to available career records.
He has been listed as without a club since the start of 2026, making Penybont his latest destination.
Barrow reunited with Penybont marquee signing
There is another reason Barrow’s arrival carries particular interest for Welsh football followers.
He came through a Wales youth generation which included a number of players who went on to make their mark in the professional game.
The 2010 Wales Under-17 group featured Barrow alongside the likes of Tom Lawrence, Adam Henley, Josh Yorwerth and James Loveridge.
Barrow was also in the West Brom academy around the same period as players including Jonathan Leko and Tyler Roberts.
That provides an interesting Welsh football link given Penybont’s recent recruitment of Leko, who joined the club after a career featuring Premier League experience with West Brom.
For Barrow, the move represents a return to the country where his international football journey began.
For Penybont, it adds another player with experience well beyond the Cymru Premier to a squad which has already undergone significant change.
Penybont’s unbeaten start
Barrow arrives at a club which has made an unbeaten start to the new Cymru Premier campaign.
Penybont’s most recent outing ended in a 3-2 victory over Briton Ferry Llansawel, leaving Griffiths’ side third in the table.
They trail league leaders The New Saints by four points.
The next test comes against Ammanford on September 18, with Barrow now potentially in line to make his first appearance in Penybont colours.
And if the new signing has to wait a little longer, the September 26 meeting with Airbus UK Broughton provides another opportunity for the latest addition to Griffiths’ squad.
A summer of change
Barrow’s arrival is the latest move in an eye-catching summer of change for the Bridgend club.
Jonathan Leko is arguably the standout addition, with the former West Brom and England youth international following the arrival of ex-Coventry City and Nottingham Forest forward Tyler Walker.
Liam Shephard has also joined after leaving Newport County, while Eduino Vaz, Ethan Vaughan, Tom Mehew, Ryan Hill and Melbourne have all arrived after spending last season in English football.
Alyas Debono was another late addition, joining Penybont from Cardiff City on deadline day.
Now Barrow adds another intriguing name to the mix.
