From a ground just 0.2 miles from a railway station to one more than 16 miles away, here’s how every Ardal South East club ranks for rail access

Getting to a football match without a car can sometimes be a challenge, particularly at the lower levels of the Welsh football pyramid.

But for supporters looking to use public transport, some Ardal South East grounds are considerably easier to reach than others.

We have ranked all 16 Ardal South East clubs by the approximate walking distance from their ground to the nearest mainline railway station.

The figures show a huge variation across the league, with the closest ground just 0.2 miles from a station and the most remote more than 16 miles away.

Risca United are closest to a train station

Risca United’s Ty Isaf Park comes out on top for rail accessibility, with Risca and Pontymister station approximately 0.2 miles away.

That is followed by Croesyceiliog, whose Woodland Road ground is around 0.3 miles from Cwmbran station.

Caldicot Town and Chepstow Town are also among the easiest clubs to reach by rail, with their grounds approximately 0.6 and 0.7 miles from their respective stations.

Abergavenny Town completes the top five at 1.2 miles from Abergavenny station.

At the other end of the table, Brecon Corries face a very different journey. The Rich Field is approximately 16.6 miles on foot from Merthyr Tydfil station, making it by far the longest distance in the list.

Blaenavon Blues are the next furthest away, with Ebbw Vale Town station around 7.1 miles from the Memorial Ground.

The average Ardal South East ground is 3.1 miles from a station

Across the 16 clubs, the combined approximate walking distance is 50 miles, giving an average of 3.125 miles per ground.

That average is heavily influenced by the two longest journeys, however.

If Brecon Corries and Blaenavon Blues are removed, the average distance for the other 14 clubs drops to around 2.6 miles.

There is also a clear cluster of clubs within two miles of a station. Seven of the 16 grounds are no more than 1.8 miles away, while nine are within two miles.

At the other end, only four clubs are more than four miles from their nearest mainline station.

Three clubs share the same station

One interesting feature of the list is the concentration of clubs around a handful of stations.

Cwmbran station serves three grounds in the list: Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran Celtic and Cwmbran Town. Their approximate walking distances range from just 0.3 miles to 2.3 miles.

There are also two clubs based around Caldicot station, with Caldicot Town only 0.6 miles away and Undy approximately 2.3 miles away.

Newport station provides rail access for both Newport Corinthians and Lliswerry, while Goytre and New Inn share the same approximate distance from Pontypool & New Inn station.

The figures are approximate walking distances rather than journey times, so the experience for supporters can vary depending on the route, terrain, crossings and match-day conditions.

Nevertheless, the numbers show a sizeable divide across the Ardal South East: nine of the 16 clubs are within 2.3 miles of a mainline station, while Brecon Corries are more than seven times further away than the next club on the list.
