Bangor City: Former Wrexham and Wales defender gets role at Cymru North club

Steve Evans has joined Bangor City 1876 as assistant manager after the North Wales club appointed Huw Griffiths as their new first-team boss.
The former Wrexham and Wales defender arrives at the Citizens after most recently working as assistant manager to former Wrexham midfielder Lee Fowler at Flint Town United.
Evans has been part of the Flint coaching set-up since May 2024 and now links up with Griffiths as Bangor look to build a new-look management team.
The appointment follows the club’s decision to bring in Griffiths as first-team manager on Friday, ending a search that lasted almost a month after Michael Johnston’s departure.
Evans joins Bangor after Flint Town United spell
Evans has spent the past two years working alongside Fowler at Flint Town United, gaining further coaching experience after a successful spell in charge of Colwyn Bay.
He took charge of the Seagulls for 90 games and guided them to the Cymru North title during the 2022/23 season.
That success added to a playing career which saw Evans feature prominently in Welsh domestic football.
His career was mainly spent with The New Saints, where he enjoyed two spells, while he also represented Wrexham between 2006 and 2009.
Former Wrexham defender earned seven Wales caps
Evans’ time at Wrexham also saw him break into the Wales senior set-up.
The defender made seven appearances for his country during his playing career, alongside his experience with several of the leading clubs in the Welsh game.
He also played for Connah’s Quay Nomads and Caernarfon Town, giving him extensive knowledge of football across North Wales.
That experience will now be brought to Bangor as Evans begins work alongside Griffiths.
Bangor reveal new-look management team
Griffiths was appointed after a lengthy recruitment process following Johnston’s departure.
Bangor said there were 35 applicants for the managerial position before the club opted for the former Cefn Druids and Caernarfon Town boss.
With Evans now joining as his assistant, the Citizens have completed the key appointments in their new first-team management structure.
Director of Football Lee Dixon said the club were delighted to bring Evans on board.
“We’re delighted to welcome Steve Evans to the club, joining Huw Griffiths as part of our new-look management team.
“The appointments of Huw and Steve underline the ambition we have for Bangor City 1876 and the direction we want to take the club.
“Both bring a wealth of experience and knowledge, and we’re excited to have them leading us forward.”
The pair will now begin work as Bangor prepare for the next chapter under Griffiths, with Evans bringing both his coaching experience and extensive knowledge of Welsh football to the role.
Flint Town United also make a change
There is another interesting link between the two clubs, with Flint Town United having appointed former Bangor City defender Danny Holmes as their new manager following Lee Fowler’s departure.
Holmes made the perfect start to life in charge as the Silkmen recorded a 3-0 victory over Ammanford.
Tunde Owolabi scored twice before Lassana Mendes added a third to secure Flint’s first win of the campaign.
The result also lifted Flint out of the relegation zone, giving Holmes an immediate boost as he takes over the club.
It means Evans’ departure from Fowler’s coaching staff comes at a time of change for Flint, with Holmes now taking charge and the former Wrexham and Wales defender moving on to a new challenge alongside Griffiths at Bangor.
