Baglan Dragons avoid Welsh Cup upset despite falling behind to Llantwit Fardre
Baglan Dragons came from behind to beat Llantwit Fardre 3-1, overcoming a lively start from the hosts to avoid a potential Welsh Cup upset.
In a competitive contest, Llantwit showed plenty of energy and attacking intent, backed by a vocal home crowd, but Baglan’s growing influence and clinical finishing helped them take control. Tobias Jones scored twice, while Tom Davies’ free-kick delivery also found the net as the visitors turned the game around after Ryan Prosser’s opener.
Bright start from Llantwit
There was a lovely family atmosphere around the ground before kick-off, with Llantwit’s young supporters singing throughout and youngsters enjoying a mini-game on the pitch at half-time.
Llantwit started brightly, with captain Ceirion Harris helping to break up play in midfield and Connor Shields pressing energetically. The hosts looked to use the flanks, while Ryan Prosser provided an outlet up front.
Baglan, however, carried a threat of their own. Tom Randall played a fine through ball into Tobias Jones, who used his strength to hold off the defence before sending a low shot agonisingly wide. Jones was beginning to cause problems, and the visitors gradually grew into the contest.
The breakthrough came in the 16th minute, though, and it was a moment of real quality from Llantwit. A long ball caused uncertainty in the Baglan defence, and Prosser took full advantage, unleashing a superb volley beyond goalkeeper Cameron Clarke to put the hosts ahead.
Baglan responded with an excellent cross, which Jones met with a well-timed header to restore parity at 1-1. It was a significant moment in the match, Llantwit had made the brighter start, but Baglan’s response showed they were not going to let the hosts dictate the game.
Baglan turn the tide
As the first half progressed, Baglan began to enjoy more possession and found increasing joy with balls over the top. Llantwit continued to compete well for second balls, but the visitors were putting the home defence under greater pressure.
The decisive moment before the break came from a free kick. Tom Davies delivered from the right, and the ball caught everyone out as it found its way into the net, putting Baglan ahead. Having been behind, the Dragons had turned the scoreline around in a 12-minute spell.
Llantwit still threatened. Ciaran Cox saw a shot deflected, forcing Clarke into a low save, while Iestyn Stone pressed Cameron McKnight into an uncomfortable defensive moment. Stone also tried to thread a pass through to Prosser, but it just evaded the striker.
The hosts thought they had found another goal when a delivery from Samuel Richards reached Connor Shields, who appeared to turn the ball home. However, the goal was ruled out, much to the frustration of the home crowd. Prosser was also shown a yellow card, seemingly for persistent fouling, as the first half became increasingly scrappy.
At half-time, Baglan held a 2-1 advantage, having made their growing pressure count.
Llantwit push for an equaliser
Llantwit came out for the second half determined to get back into the tie, and they began to ask more questions of the Baglan defence.
The hosts worked the ball into wide areas and looked to deliver into the box, with Lewis Marling finding space and sending a dangerous ball across goal that Iestyn Stone could not quite reach. Ceirion Harris also tried to get Llantwit moving forward, while the home side began to draw more fouls from their opponents.
Baglan remained dangerous, however. Davies tried his luck from a free kick, having scored from a similar situation before half-time, but this time his effort flew onto the roof of the net.
Llantwit continued to press. Prosser played a good ball over the top for James Natt, only for Randall to intercept, before Prosser himself tried to curl a shot through a crowded penalty area. Baglan defended resolutely, repeatedly putting bodies in the way to prevent the hosts from getting a clean strike at goal.
One of Llantwit’s best chances came when Iestyn Stone found Natt inside the box. The midfielder got his shot away, but Clarke produced an excellent save to keep Baglan in front. It was a crucial intervention as Llantwit threatened to make their growing pressure count.
The visitors had opportunities to extend their lead, too. A corner was not properly cleared, and Jonathan Davies struck from around 20 yards, only to see his effort crash against the crossbar. It was a huge warning for Llantwit, who had to remain alert despite their improved attacking display.
Jones delivers the decisive blow
With Llantwit committing more players forward, the space for Baglan to counter-attack became increasingly apparent.
The visitors made their substitutions to bring fresh legs into the contest, and one of those changes proved particularly influential. Substitute Iestyn Williams threaded an excellent pass through to Jones, sending the striker clean through one-on-one with goalkeeper Jason Pritchard.
Jones showed composure to round the advancing goalkeeper before rolling the ball towards the net. A Llantwit defender tried desperately to get back and block the shot, but could not prevent it crossing the line.
Jones had his second goal of the afternoon, and Baglan had a 3-1 lead. The goal was a significant blow to Llantwit, who had worked hard to find an equaliser but were now facing a two-goal deficit.
Llantwit refuse to give up
Even after conceding the third goal, Llantwit continued to look for a way back into the game. Prosser headed the ball down for Ciaran Cox, and the move eventually reached Connor Shields around the six-yard area. His low shot, however, went narrowly wide of the post.
Prosser then had another opportunity after a ball was threaded into him inside the box, but with a Baglan defender tight to him, his left-footed effort flew over the bar.
In the closing stages, Llantwit kept pushing the ball out to the flanks, but Baglan had plenty of bodies back to protect their advantage. Prosser rose to meet a late cross, only for the assistant referee to raise the flag for offside.
The final stages saw Llantwit show plenty of effort, some promising attacking moves and several opportunities, but not quite the finishing touch required to turn the contest around.
A deserved turnaround for Baglan
Baglan Dragons ultimately progressed with a 3–1 victory, having recovered impressively from Prosser’s superb opener. Jones’ two goals proved decisive, while Davies’ free-kick delivery gave the visitors the lead before the interval.
Llantwit will feel they had opportunities to make the game more uncomfortable for their opponents, particularly in the second half, when Clarke’s saves and a series of near misses kept them at bay. Their supporters were vocal throughout, creating a warm, family atmosphere and backing the team right to the end.
But Baglan’s response to going behind, their defensive resilience under pressure and their ability to exploit space on the counter proved the difference. The Dragons avoided the Welsh Cup upset and advanced after a match in which Llantwit made them work hard for the result.
