Cardiff City manager Noah Bushby praised his side’s development and attacking play after the Bluebirds handed The New Saints their first defeat of the season with a 1-0 victory in Leckwith.

City made it five consecutive wins in the Adran Premier with a hard-fought triumph, extending their impressive run of form as they continued to build momentum.

The decisive moment came early in the contest when Mackenzie Olden broke forward and delivered a brilliant through ball for Gillian Keenan. Bearing down on goal, the Cardiff striker kept her composure to slot home her seventh goal in as many matches this campaign.

The result marked another significant step forward for Bushby’s side, who have shown encouraging signs of progress in recent weeks.

Noah Bushby delighted with Cardiff City’s progress after fifth straight win

Bushby was full of praise for his players after the final whistle, highlighting the team’s growth and the improvements they have made since the beginning of the season.

“I’m really happy,” the Cardiff manager said. “I said to the players at the end, so much of it is about our development and our growth, how much we’re rebuilding and where we’ve got to get to.

“After the first two games of the season, there were positive signs, but the last four building into this were really positive. The development that we’ve seen over the last few games has been really good.

“As we went into today as confidently as we were, with the intent of how we wanted to play, I thought we were outstanding.”

The victory continued Cardiff’s winning run and provided further evidence of the progress Bushby believes his side are making as they look to maintain their strong start to the campaign.

Cardiff City’s wide play earns praise from manager

One of the standout features of Cardiff’s performance was their ability to create opportunities out wide, with Olden’s contribution to Keenan’s winning goal providing a perfect example of the threat they carried in forward areas.

Bushby, however, was keen to stress that his side’s approach was not limited to one flank, pointing to the work done on both wings during pre-season and the opening weeks of the campaign.

“It’s both wings, to be honest,” he said.

“We’ve worked a lot across pre-season and the start of the season about how we can create overloads out wide, getting the ball out wide and having different movements from various different players.

“You can see all those different things coming in, and, yeah, really positive.”

The Cardiff manager’s comments underline the importance of the tactical work behind the team’s recent performances, with the Bluebirds beginning to turn those ideas into results on the pitch.

Bushby praises Cardiff full-backs for handling The New Saints threat

While Keenan’s goal proved decisive, Bushby also highlighted the defensive work that helped Cardiff protect their advantage against a dangerous TNS side.

The manager was particularly impressed with his full-backs, who were required to adapt to different attacking threats, including Fiona Barry and Caitlin Chapman.

Bushby explained that the players had to respond to the contrasting styles of their opponents, with Chapman offering a more direct threat while Barry looked to get around the outside.

He said: “I thought our full-backs were outstanding. They swapped wings quite a lot, or at least once in the second half, and both of them knew that they had different types of wingers to deal with.

“Caitlin Chapman is a bit more direct, whereas Fiona will go outside, and we know that.

“We knew they had to deal with those different threats, and for the players to be that reactive and make sure they can change in those moments was outstanding.

“A lot of credit goes to them for getting the three points.”

Keeping TNS at bay was particularly significant given that the result represented their first defeat of the season, with Cardiff combining an early attacking breakthrough with a disciplined defensive display.

Cardiff City turn attention to difficult Briton Ferry trip

Attention now turns to Cardiff’s next challenge, with Briton Ferry waiting for Bushby’s side in their next fixture.

Despite the confidence gained from five consecutive victories, the manager was quick to warn against complacency, insisting that his players would need to approach the away trip with the same focus and determination.

Bushby believes Briton Ferry will provide a stern test, pointing to their previous meeting and the difficulties of playing at their ground.

“Obviously, it’s taking it game by game,” he said. “Briton Ferry are a very strong side. They were unlucky not to get something against us here a few weeks ago.

“It’s definitely not a game we take lightly, especially going away there. They make it very hard to play at their ground and on their pitch.

“We’re definitely not going to take it lightly and, you know, we’ve got to approach it positively and confidently after the last five games.”

For Cardiff, the challenge will be to carry their growing confidence into their next outing while continuing the development that Bushby believes has been so evident in recent weeks. With five wins in a row and Keenan continuing to deliver in front of goal, the Bluebirds have given themselves plenty of reasons to be optimistic.
