Scott Coughlan has expressed his gratitude to Llanelli Town following confirmation of his departure from the club.

The Reds announced on Tuesday night that the goalkeeper would be leaving Stebonheath Park, bringing an end to his third spell with the club. For those three stints, the 26-year-old made 150 appearances for Llanelli.

Coughlan began the 2025/26 campaign with the Reds but was an unused substitute in their Nathaniel MG Cup fixture against Ynyshir Albions. Since then, summer signing Mike Lewis has started the opening two JD Cymru Premier matches. Development team goalkeeper Oliver Williams was listed as a substitute in the match against Barry Town United, while no backup goalkeeper was named for the 6–1 defeat to Caernarfon Town.

Posting on X, Coughlan shared his thanks:

“Massive thank you to everyone at @LlanellIReds. Had some amazing memories created over the last 3 seasons, and it’s been an absolute privilege to get the club back to the Welsh Premier League.

To all the supporters, volunteers and people behind the scenes, it’s been a pleasure.”

The Swansea-born shot-stopper became a key figure during Lee John’s tenure, joining the club in the summer of 2022 following a spell at Carmarthen Town. He went on to make over 100 appearances in all competitions over three seasons, helping the Reds to finish in the top two of the Cymru South for three consecutive years.

Last season, Coughlan missed just three league matches as Llanelli clinched the Cymru South title. He kept 10 clean sheets and conceded only 21 goals. The club also reached the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup, recording four clean sheets along the way before being eliminated by Connah’s Quay Nomads.

Llanelli have undergone significant changes this summer as they prepare for life in the top flight, with 10 new signings and several departures reshaping Lee John’s squad.

Among the arrivals are Harrison Bright and Josh Yorwerth from league rivals Barry Town United, as well as Sam Parsons, Rio Booth, and Jordan Vickers from Carmarthen Town. However, Vickers made just one competitive appearance before moving to Trefelin BGC.

Mike Lewis, who has replaced Coughlan as first-choice keeper, joined from Penybont. Meanwhile, Newport County have loaned out youngsters Jac Norris and Morgan Evans to Llanelli for the season. Alex Bonthron, who scored goals for Cwmbran Celtic in the Cymru South, returned to Welsh football by signing for Llanelli following a spell in the English non-league with Cinderford Town.

Departures include Scott Tancock to Morriston Town, and Kurtis Rees, Cole Gibbings, John Chesters, and Alex Giardelli all joining Carmarthen Town. Cambrian United snapped up Cam Strinati, Taylor Jones, and last season’s Cymru South Golden Boot winner, Liam Eason. Henry Jones and Ioan Evans have also moved on.

In the wake of Coughlan’s departure, Llanelli face a quick turnaround with two games in the space of four days. They host Briton Ferry Llansawel under the Sgorio cameras on Friday night (August 22), before heading to the Dragon Bet Stadium to take on Penybont on Bank Holiday Monday (August 25).
