A major shock has hit the Ardal Leagues with a manager departing his role less than 24 hours after a play-off defeat.

Cwmbran Town have confirmed the departure of manager Dale Clark following their defeat to Pontardawe Town on Friday, May 29.

Goals from Sammy Harrison and Jake Barrow promoted Pontardawe Town to the Cymru South and consigned Cwmbran to another season in the Ardal South East, however it was a season which defied expectations.

Clark had guided the club to a second-place finish in what was their first season back in the third tier for 16 years. They ultimately finished just one point behind champions Caerphilly Athletic, with a draw against Brecon Corries proving decisive in the title race.

The 37-year-old leaves after exactly two years in charge, having succeeded Steve Davies. In his departure statement, Clark confirmed he would be stepping away from football for the time being due to increased work commitments.

Dale Clarke’s parting message to Cwmbran Town

Clark’s tenure at Cwmbran Town comes to a close after a highly impressive spell in charge, during which he restored stability and consistency at the club. Across two consecutive league campaigns, Cwmbran remained unbeaten at home, while his overall record in 60 league matches stands at 48 wins, eight draws and just four defeats.

In a personal statement confirming his departure, Clark said:

“I’ve made the difficult decision to step down as manager of Cwmbrân Town,” began Clark in a statement published on the official club website.

“It’s not a decision I have taken lightly but this is purely a personal decision, having been coaching and manager for the last seven seasons.

He added: “It has been a relentless, although an enjoyable and amazing experience. I feel it’s time to take some time away from football and enjoy time with my family. Coupled with the increase in work commitments, I don’t feel I can give my full commitment to the role and the club, which is deserves.

“The two seasons I have been at Cwmbrân Town have been amazing, and it’s unbelievable what we have achieved in a short space of time. To every player who’s represented the club, thank you for putting the club back where it belongs and for everything you have given me during my time here.

“I wish Cwmbrân Town every success and hope they go one better next season and become champions again!

“Thank you!”

What does the Ardal Leagues look like for Cwmbran Town?

The tributes to Clark have reflected the impact he made during his two years at the club, both on and off the pitch. Under his leadership, Cwmbran Town re-established itself as one of the strongest sides in the region, narrowly missing out on the league title this season and reaching the promotion play-off final.

Paying tribute to the departing manager, the club highlighted both his impressive record and the personal relationships he built during his tenure.

Club chairman Dan O’Connell said: “It’s a truly remarkable record that means Dale is up there with the likes of Tony Wilcox as one of the greatest managers we have ever had.

“It’s been my pleasure and privilege to work with Dale, and more importantly, to have gained a dear friend for life.”

Cwmbran Town are expected to learn their divisional opponents for next season in the near future, with league allocations set to be confirmed imminently.

Among the most notable developments is the relegation of Cwmbran Celtic from the Cymru South, setting the stage for a renewed local rivalry. Meanwhile, Newport Corinthians secured the Gwent Premier League title, with New Inn finishing as runners-up.
