Taffs Well AFC have moved swiftly to replace Dale Gardiner, making an ambitious appointment ahead of the new season.

The Wellmen have confirmed the appointment of Mark Dunford as their new first-team manager. Dunford returns to management after leaving Pontypridd United in December.

Speaking after his appointment, Dunford said: “Taffs Well is a club with a rich history and a proper football club feel to it, reinforced by the people around the club.

“There is already a talented group of players, and I’m looking forward to getting to work with them.”

The experienced coach arrives at Rhiw’r Ddar with an impressive record in the Ardal Leagues. During his time with Trethomas Bluebirds, he guided the club to success in the Ardal South Cup and the Ardal South East title in 2024.

Dunford also oversaw an excellent debut campaign at that level, leading Trethomas Bluebirds to a second-place finish and establishing the club as one of the division’s strongest sides.

Club secretary Nigel Bircham said: “Massive appointment for us, welcome Mark.”

Meanwhile, former player Lloyd Toghil added: “Decent appointment, good luck Mark,” while experienced Welsh League boss Dean Morris, now at Treforest, commented: “Good move for both.”

Taffs Well will be hoping Dunford can bring similar success to the club after a difficult campaign. The Wellmen narrowly avoided a second successive relegation last season, finishing just two points above South Gower AFC in the final standings.

The appointment signals clear intent from Taffs Well AFC as they look to stabilise their position and climb the tiers of Welsh football under Dunford’s leadership.
