The Ardal North East looks set to be an intriguing division to follow this season, with no sides relegated from the Cymru North and two clubs stepping up from below.

Carno have been promoted from the Mid Wales League, while FC Queen’s Park move up from the Ardal North East. Kerry also received a reprieve following Flint Mountain’s demotion from the Cymru North to the feeder leagues.

Of the four Ardal League divisions, the North East has seen the fewest changes ahead of the new campaign, adding an extra layer of continuity to the season ahead.

Knighton Town tipped to go one better

Knighton Town were defeated by Porthmadog in last season’s play-off final, but will take pride from their first campaign at this level and how strongly they performed throughout.

A couple of familiar names to followers of the Cymru Premier will be Shane Sutton and captain Luke Boundford, both well remembered from their time at Newtown. The pair featured during the Robins’ successful spell, when they qualified for Europe and represented Wales on the continent.

Manager Harry Stokes is one of the youngest bosses in Welsh football, and having narrowly missed out on promotion last season, he is being tipped to lead Knighton to the second tier for the first time since 1998.

Expected to sit just behind Knighton but still mount a serious challenge are Dolgellau. They finished third last season, only two points adrift of Knighton, and have secured top-five finishes in each of the last three campaigns. A major factor in their success last term was Gerwyn Williams, who scored 31 goals.

Bow Street and Penycae are also expected to be in the mix for a play-off push. Bow Street, in particular, have been remarkably consistent, finishing in the top five in every season since the formation of the Ardal North East and placing second in both 2024 and 2025. However, due to a lack of a Tier One Licence, they have yet to compete in the play-off finals.

Kerry may be slightly lower in the betting, likely due to their reprieve last season, but they could be one to watch after signing Jamie Breese. Breese was instrumental in Holywell Town’s promotion last year, finishing as both Cymru North Player of the Year and Golden Boot winner, and his arrival could significantly boost Kerry’s promotion hopes.

Cefn Albion could be one to watch, however, with Kham Steventon arriving from Builth Wells after being named in the Team of the Season. Josh High has also joined from Ruthin Town, while Oliwier Fiedor arrives from Rhyl 1879.

Relegation battle too close to call

There is no clear favourite for relegation in the division, with Rhos Aelwyd, Llangollen Town, Llandrindod Wells, and newly promoted FC Queen’s Park all priced at similar odds.

Queen’s Park arrive on the back of an excellent campaign in which they collected several honours at the fourth-tier level, and it will be interesting to see how they adapt to life in a higher division. They have so far signed Mikey Pritchard and Ben Hughes in the summer transfer window.

Among the sides returning from last season, Llandrindod Wells finished 13th, Llangollen Town 12th, and Rhos Aelwyd 11th.
