A star from last season’s Cymru Premier has reportedly earned a dream move to Premier League giants Man United.

Kit Margetson has apparently left EFL Championship side Swansea City, according to Swansea City fan page Only Swans, and headed to Old Trafford to join one of the most recognisable clubs in world football.

The proposed move follows Manchester United’s interest in the goalkeeper after they watched him in March during his loan spell at Connah’s Quay Nomads. United goalkeeping scout Tony Coton, who was also influential in the club’s move for Senne Lammens, was present at Connah’s Quay’s match against The New Saints.

The lowdown on Man United’s latest arrival

If confirmed, the 19-year-old is set for a move to the Theatre of Dreams after a breakthrough season in which he made 34 appearances in his first taste of senior football.

He kept 10 clean sheets, helping Connah’s Quay Nomads secure qualification for the UEFA Conference League after a year’s absence. Manager John Disney was a strong admirer and made significant efforts to sign him permanently, convincing Swansea City that the Essity Stadium would be the best environment for his continued development.

Following the end of his loan spell, Margetson posted a heartfelt farewell message on social media, writing: “Thank you! Proud of what we’ve achieved together this season. Europa Conference League secured! Wishing the club nothing but success for the future.”

He also became one of a select group of players to represent their country while playing in the Cymru Premier, earning an appearance for the Under-21s in a 2-0 win over Belarus in March.

The same outlet reporting Margetson’s move claimed back in March that Manchester United were not the only club interested in signing him.

Premier League rivals Brighton & Hove Albion, Crystal Palace and Liverpool were also reportedly keeping tabs on the young goalkeeper.

It’s being suggested by them that Margetson will be loaned out to a National League club, which will be his next step after a taste of senior football in Wales.

Margetson Brothers make summer transfers

Kit isn’t the only Margetson to be on the move this summer, as his older brother Ben, whom he faced last season, has also departed the Welsh top flight.

Ben, six years his senior, is a centre-back and was most recently at Barry Town United. He has also stepped into the English pyramid, joining Merthyr Town, who compete in the National League North.

Their father, Martyn, is the goalkeeping coach for the Wales national team and recently left his role as Head of Goalkeeping at Swansea City following the conclusion of the campaign.

The continued success of development in the Cymru Premier

If confirmed, Margetson’s move would represent another major success story for the Cymru Premier, highlighting the league’s growing reputation as a platform for young talent. His season at Connah’s Quay Nomads has helped propel him from senior football debutant to a reported Manchester United signing in less than a year.

This summer has also seen Ieuan Owen leave Barry Town United to join Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock for an undisclosed fee. Another young goalkeeper, Luke Armstrong, impressed during a loan spell at Penybont, helping the club qualify for the UEFA Conference League before earning a season-long move to Scottish Championship side Raith Rovers.

Earlier this year, James Crole completed a move to Newport County, following in the footsteps of former Haverfordwest County defender Lee Jenkins, while Gabriel Kircough joined Forest Green Rovers. Isaac Lee also penned a move to the EFL, joining Shrewsbury Town from Flint Town United.

Together with Margetson’s reported move, those transfers underline the Cymru Premier’s growing reputation as a pathway for young talent to progress into the professional game across the UK.
