Cardiff City have decided to loan one of their brightest academy prospects to the Cymru Premier, sending him back to a club where he previously enjoyed a successful spell.

Dan Higgs will once again represent Penybont, having joined the Bridgend-based side on a season-long loan. The 18-year-old goalkeeper links up with the squad as they prepare for their UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers against FC Santa Coloma.

It will be a familiar setting for Higgs, with Penybont’s home leg on July 6 set to be played at the Cardiff City Stadium. Ahead of his move, he also featured in several pre-season fixtures for the club, best preparing him for the upcoming European matches.

Cardiff City continue to trust Penybont with player development

The Championship side have made significant progress with their academy in a short space of time, particularly following the appointment of first-team manager Brian Barry-Murphy, who has placed a strong emphasis on youth development.

Cardiff’s promotion-winning campaign saw academy graduates such as Dylan Lawlor, Joel Colwill, Rubin Colwill, and Ronan Kpakio play key roles in the club’s success.

With former Barry Town United manager Gavin Chesterfield now serving as Academy Manager at Cardiff City, the club continues to prioritise finding the right environments for young players to develop.

Higgs’ move represents the next step in his progression, following a previous work-experience loan at Penybont last season, where he made six appearances and kept two clean sheets.

His earlier spell came after Luke Armstrong, two years his senior, was also loaned to the club. When Penybont found themselves short of goalkeeping options, Cardiff stepped in to support Rhys Griffiths’ side, further strengthening the relationship between the two clubs.

Battle with experienced Cymru Leagues goalkeeper

Higgs is not the only goalkeeping arrival at the club this summer, with Penybont also signing Alex Pennock, son of Haverfordwest County manager Tony Pennock.

The 25-year-old joins after a spell at Llanelli Town, where he was first-choice goalkeeper last season and even wore the captain’s armband at times. Despite a challenging campaign, Pennock still managed to keep three clean sheets in 26 appearances.

With 68 Cymru Premier appearances to his name, Pennock brings valuable experience at the Welsh top-flight level. His arrival sets up an interesting selection battle, with manager Rhys Griffiths now deciding between experience and youth when choosing his first-choice goalkeeper.

That decision could prove particularly significant in Europe, with Penybont having previously trusted Luke Armstrong in their European campaign last season. Griffiths must now decide whether to lean on Pennock’s experience against opponents such as FC Santa Coloma or place his faith in the youthful promise of Higgs on the continental stage.

Penybont’s transfer business to date

With new investment and board members Ryan Paisey and David Zeeman, Penybont have strengthened their squad with several notable signings.

Ryan Hill has arrived from Aldershot Town for a fee, which is a rarity at this level after captaining the National League side, while Eduino Vaz joins from the English fifth tier. Max Melbourne, formerly of Lincoln City, Walsall, and Stevenage, brings EFL experience to the Cymru Premier outfit. Tom Mehew arrives from Bristol Rovers’ academy, alongside domestic additions Marinho Manga (Cardiff Draconians), Morgan Weaver (Carmarthen Town), and Dan Jefferies (Briton Ferry Llansawel).

For Cardiff City fans tracking Dan Higgs and the Welsh game, Cymru Football TV, what we’ve dubbed the “Netflix of the Cymru Premier, offers live match coverage via match, monthly, or seasonal passes. Penybont will be busy with European fixtures over the next fortnight before beginning their domestic campaign on Sunday, August 2, at home against defending champions The New Saints.
