Cardiff City Women have continued their squad rebuild ahead of the new season by signing two former Bristol Rovers players as new head coach Noah Bushby begins to shape his team following a major period of change.

The Bluebirds are entering a new era after Bushby replaced long-serving manager Iain Darbyshire, with the new boss making the perfect start by guiding Cardiff City to Welsh Cup glory after a dramatic penalty shootout victory following a two-goal comeback.

However, despite that success, the summer has brought significant change, with several key players departing — many of whom have moved to Adran Premier rivals.

With important gaps to fill, Bushby has moved quickly to strengthen his squad, bringing in defensive reinforcements and adding further experience ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Cardiff City Women complete double signing of former Bristol Rovers defender

Cardiff City Women have confirmed the arrivals of Ella Hilliard and TJ Gauvin, both of whom previously played for Bristol Rovers, while Gillian Keenan has also joined the club from Treaty United.

The signings represent the first steps in Bushby’s plans to rebuild a competitive squad capable of challenging at the top end of the Adran Premier.

Ella Hilliard returns to Cardiff City

Hilliard is no stranger to the Welsh capital, having previously represented Cardiff City earlier in her career before moving into the Bristol City Academy setup.

The centre-back went on to gain valuable experience with Derby County, Gwalia United and, most recently, Bristol Rovers.

The 22-year-old also brings international pedigree, having represented Wales at every age-group level up to Under-19s.

Speaking to Cardiff City TV after completing her return to the club, Hilliard expressed her excitement at coming back to Cardiff.

“It feels amazing to be back. It’s been seven years since I’ve been here, and I had a great experience at the Club back when I was 15. I love the Club so I’m so happy to be back.”

Hilliard revealed that her previous relationship with Bushby played a key role in her decision to return.

“After Noah reached out to me, from when I was here the first time, Noah was here, and we got on really well. I know he’s such a lovely person and such a good coach as well.”

The defender also outlined what supporters can expect from her on the pitch.

“I’m someone who obviously gives 100% every time. I’m really happy to be here, and I’m someone who absolutely loves the Club. I’ll always give my all in every game I play.”

TJ Gauvin adds defensive strength

Potentially partnering Hilliard at the heart of the Cardiff defence is TJ Gauvin, who arrives from Gwalia United.

Gauvin has already gained experience playing alongside current Cardiff City teammate Lily Billingham, having previously shared the pitch with her at club level.

The defender said joining Cardiff City was a special moment, having grown up watching the club.

“It’s a real privilege. I used to come down to the stadium all the time when I was younger to watch Cardiff City. It feels like an honour to be putting on the shirt and playing for this Club.”

Gauvin described herself as a committed defender who will bring energy and determination to the team.

“I’m a loud player. I love defending, tackling and winning, so I’ll do anything I can to achieve that for the team. Hopefully I’ll be an exciting player for our fans to watch.”

Bushby believes the defender will bring valuable qualities to the squad.

“TJ is another strong addition for us. We’ve been delighted with all three signings we have made so far this summer and feel they will add a lot to a squad that is already full of talent.”

He added:

“TJ is a great defender but is also a fierce competitor. We’re excited to see her bring her quality to the Adran Premier and perform in a Cardiff City shirt.”

Gillian Keenan joins from Treaty United

Winger Gillian Keenan was the next arrival announced by Cardiff City, joining the club after an impressive spell with Treaty United.

The exciting attacker has spent her career in her native Republic of Ireland, beginning with spells at Kilkenny United and Peamount United before moving to Treaty United.

Keenan joined Athlone Town in January 2022 and was part of the side that made history by winning the club’s first-ever league title in 2024.

Following her successful spell with Athlone, she returned to Treaty United for a second stint before becoming a Bluebird this summer.

Speaking to Cardiff City TV, Keenan said she was delighted to begin a new chapter in Cardiff.

“I’m very happy to be here, it’s a lovely city. I’ve spent the past week trying to figure my way around the place. I’ve enjoyed myself being here so far.”

She added:

“I did a fitness session last week with a few of the girls and got to know them too. I’m happy that I’m here and looking forward to getting going.”

Keenan is also looking forward to getting back into action during pre-season.

“It’s good to get back in pre-season. These few weeks before we get into the campaign, I’m looking forward to playing some games and having new experiences.”

Helen Evans returns to The New Saints Women

While Cardiff City continue to strengthen their squad, The New Saints Women have also confirmed a major addition of their own with the return of midfielder Helen Evans from Cardiff.

Evans has signed ahead of the 2026/27 season after previously enjoying a successful spell at Park Hall.

During her time with The Saints, the midfielder played an important role in the club’s progress, helping them win the Genero Adran Trophy — their first piece of silverware in the Welsh football pyramid — and achieve their highest-ever Genero Adran Premier finish of third place during the 2024/25 season.

At the end of that campaign, the 25-year-old moved to then-champions Cardiff City, where she made her UEFA Women’s Champions League debut against Athlone Town in July 2025.

Reflecting on her return, Evans said to the official club website:

“After four great seasons, a year away, and plenty of lessons learned, I’m incredibly excited to be back.”

She added:

“I’m looking forward to returning to a club that has played such a big part in my career, seeing familiar faces again, and embracing a new challenge.”

“I can’t wait to get started, give everything for the badge once again, and help the team achieve as much success as possible.”

Ten Cardiff City Women players commit to their futures

Alongside their new arrivals, Cardiff City Women have also secured the futures of ten existing players ahead of the new season.

Grace Olsen, Ffion Price, Hannah Power, Shannon Evans, Kerry Walklett, Seren Thomas, Lily Billingham, Mackenzie Olden, Maddison Perrott and Madison Lloyd have all signed new deals and will remain part of Bushby’s squad.

Meanwhile, Ceryn Chamberlain and Hollie Smith continue to recover from injuries, with contract discussions set to take place at a later date.
