Cymru Premier: Former Everton defender makes top-flight transfer after Norwich City exit

A defender who departed Norwich City this summer has landed on his feet after securing a move to a top-flight European club.
Charlie Wilson has joined Flint Town United, who compete in the Cymru Premier, the top tier of Welsh football.
The 6ft 3in centre-back saw his contract with Norwich expire this summer after two years with the Canaries, having predominantly featured for the club’s Under-21 side.
Wilson, who was previously on the books at Everton, moved to Norwich in 2023 on a free transfer.
Wilson makes move to Cymru Premier
The 21-year-old has now made the move to Wales as he looks to continue his development at senior level with Flint Town.
Wilson made at least 59 appearances for Norwich’s Under-21s during his time at the club, scoring twice.
Of those appearances, 52 came in Premier League 2, with the defender regularly entrusted with the captain’s armband.
His arrival gives Flint Town another option at the heart of their defence as they compete in the Cymru Premier.

Wilson began his career with Everton and made 30 appearances for their Under-18 side.
He subsequently moved to Norwich in 2023, where he continued to gain experience in the club’s academy set-up.
The centre-back also spent part of last season on loan at King’s Lynn Town in the National League North, making four appearances during his spell with the club.
Now, after leaving Norwich, Wilson will have the opportunity to take the next step in his career in the Welsh top flight.
Wilson reveals defender who inspires his game
During his time at Norwich City, Wilson revealed that he looked up to experienced defender Shane Duffy, who he saw as a player he could learn from in the same position.
The young centre-back highlighted Duffy’s experience at the highest level and explained how watching him train provided an opportunity to develop his own game.
“He’s a great player in my position; he’s experienced and played at that top level for a while. Seeing him train, he’s always someone I look up to,” Wilson said to the official club website.
The defender also made clear his ambitions for the future, with breaking into senior football high on his list of priorities.
“I want to break into the first-team here, as I’m enjoying playing here so much. But as I said before, I want to keep improving day by day and just seeing where it takes me. I’m looking forward to the future.”
Flint Town United still searching for first win
Flint Town United are still searching for their first win of the season, although they picked up their first point in a 1-1 draw against Penybont.
Tom Mehew put the visitors ahead, but Lassana Mendes struck a minute before the end of normal time to rescue a point for Lee Fowler’s side.
That result followed four consecutive defeats for Flint, who had previously lost to Llandudno, Barry Town United, Cambrian United and Briton Ferry Llansawel.
Wilson could now be handed his senior debut in a baptism of fire when Flint face local rivals Connah’s Quay Nomads on August 31.
It would be a significant first test for the former Norwich City defender as he begins the next chapter of his career in the Cymru Premier.
