Wrexham legend makes transfer move to Welsh rivals after summer exit

Connah’s Quay Nomads have completed the signing of Rosie Hughes following her summer departure from Wrexham.

Hughes leaves the Red Dragons after a remarkable five-year spell, establishing herself as Wrexham Women’s record leading scorer.

The prolific striker now begins a new chapter with Connah’s Quay Nomads, taking a formidable goalscoring record with her.

Hughes became one of the most prolific players in Wrexham Women’s history during her time at the club.

Across her five-year spell, she found the net 136 times in 115 appearances, an extraordinary return of more than a goal per game.

She also scored 60 goals in the Adran North across two seasons, further underlining her record as one of the division’s most prolific forwards.

Even last season, she remained a key contributor despite limited opportunities from the start.

The striker scored nine league goals, a tally bettered only by Katie Barker among her Wrexham teammates, despite starting just six league matches.

Her goalscoring exploits made Hughes a key figure for Wrexham and cemented her place in the club’s history. She lifted the Adran Premier last season, but was suspended for their Adran Trophy win.

‘What a signing’ – Chris Redfern delighted

Connah’s Quay Director of Football for Women and Girls Chris Redfern was quick to express his delight after the deal was completed.

“What a signing,” Redfern said.

“Delighted to get this over the line.”

The Nomads will now be hoping Hughes can reproduce the goalscoring form that made her such a standout player during her time with Wrexham.

Hughes could provide the missing ingredient

The Nomads have already made a positive start to the new campaign. Last week, they cruised past Wrexham Foresters with a 5-1 Adran Trophy win.

Non Williams was the standout performer from the bench, scoring twice during a 26-minute cameo.

Hannah Slack, Anna Marsh and Phoebe Ellis were also on target as Connah’s Quay progressed in style.

Hughes’s arrival adds another major attacking option to a squad that has already shown it can score goals.

Should the Nomads win the Adran North again, they will face the winners of the Adran South in the play-off final, with a place in the Adran Premier at stake.

After coming so close on previous occasions, there is hope within the club that this could finally be the year they make the breakthrough. And Hughes’ ability to consistently find the net could prove decisive.

A summer of change for back-to-back Adran North champions

It has been a summer of significant change for the Nomads following the disappointment of their defeat to Cardiff Met in the play-off final.

Jordan Parry stepped down as manager after the campaign, with Andi Griffiths subsequently taking charge.

There has also been a considerable turnover in the playing squad, with several first-team regulars moving on. Polly Wild-McGregor, Alisha Whitehead-Hughes, Megan Andrews and Elana Harley all departed to join Chester.

Griffiths has wasted little time in putting his own stamp on the squad, with several new faces arriving at the club.

Sienna Perry and Tillie Ashworth have joined from Wrexham, while goalkeeper Faye Moseley has made the move from Wigan Athletic. Seren Cashen has arrived from Llandudno, with Non Williams joining from The New Saints.
