Penybont attracted the fourth-highest attendance in Cymru Premier history as 2,666 spectators packed into the DragonBet Stadium for a memorable afternoon against Airbus UK Broughton.
The crowd was the biggest seen at a Welsh top-flight match for 22 years and more than doubled the previous record attendance for a Penybont league fixture at the stadium. Their previous record was 1,235 against Caernarfon Town in April 2025.
The occasion had been billed as The Big Bont Bash, with free admission helping bring supporters through the gates. Food and drink outlets, live entertainment and activities for children were also laid on, while several Welsh businesses and community organisations got involved.
Among those taking part were Eleri’s Welsh Cakes and Lads & Dads, a men’s mental wellbeing support group built around talking, walking, thinking and supporting.
But while the crowd came for the occasion, Penybont had to work hard to make sure the afternoon ended in celebration.
Where does Penybont’s attendance rank in the league’s history?
The 2,666 crowd moves Penybont into fourth place in the list of the highest attendances recorded in the history of the Cymru Prem.
It also means Colwyn Bay’s 2,357 spectators for their match against Caernarfon Town on April 3, 2026, drop down a place.
The current top attendances are:
- 3,250 – Porthmadog 0-2 Bangor City, May 17, 1994
- 2,746 – Barry Town 5-2 Caernarfon Town, January 26, 1997
- 2,741 – Rhyl 1-0 Total Network Solutions, April 11, 2004
- 2,666 – Penybont v Airbus UK Broughton, 2026
- 2,593 – Bangor City 5-3 Prestatyn Town, December 27, 2011
Penybont’s attendance is therefore the highest crowd recorded since Bangor City’s 2,593 against Prestatyn Town in December 2011, before Colwyn Bay’s 2026 crowd briefly took that distinction.
Airbus spoil the party before Penybont fight back
The Wingmakers did not follow the script in front of the bumper crowd.
Airbus took the lead in the 26th minute when Liam Shepard turned the ball into his own net, giving the visitors a shock advantage.
Penybont responded after the break, with Ryan Hill marking his return by bringing the hosts level. New signing Danny Barrow provided the assist as the home side finally gave their supporters something to celebrate on the pitch.
There was still time for another big moment.
Ethan Cann came off the bench to score for the second consecutive game, having waited since February for his first goal.
His contribution completed the comeback and ensured the huge crowd left the DragonBet Stadium having witnessed a Penybont victory.
“I’m thrilled,” said manager Rhys Griffiths of his performance.
“He deserves it for all his energy. He’s found himself out of the team again today, but he’s come on and got the decisive goal. It was a really cool finish from him as well.”
Five straight wins keep Penybont flying
The result extended Penybont’s winning run to five matches, while they remain unbeaten.
They sit second in the table, four points behind leaders The New Saints. Penybont’s campaign began with a goalless draw against the reigning leaders on the opening day.
For manager Rhys Griffiths, he made sure his team delivered in front of such a large home support.
“I was worried we were going to disappoint them all. I’m really pleased we were able to comeback and get the win for them, and hopefully a lot of them stay.
“It was a good win for us. To be 1-0 down at half-time, we feared the worst. I thought we played really well second-half. There’s still so much we can improve on but we got the job done.”
