Cardiff Met Retire Number 22 Shirt for Black

On the 19th May 2017, Liam Black became the first player in the club’s history to  have his shirt number (22) retired as a mark of the high esteem in which he was held by players, staff and supporters alike.

Not only did he manage the Archers reserve team to an unbeaten 2016/17 campaign in partnership with Arthur Furness, Liam also proved himself a more than capable replacement in the Met defence when called upon and but for the partnership of Woolridge and Lewis would surely have added to his tally of 10 Welsh Premier League starts.

There have certainly been more highs than lows during Black’s four years with the club, culminating in the clinching of the British Universities Championship in March.

“Of course I have many special memories of my time at the club but my personal highlight was being crowned BUCS champions however my biggest disappointment was losing out on promotion to the Welsh Premier League in the 2014/15 season by a single goal.”

Whilst Liam will be leaving to go travelling and has no definite plans for his next move in football he believes his former team-mates can continue their remarkable rise.

“The talent in this group of players is unbelievable! Last year’s campaign earned us a lot of respect meaning the expectancy this season will be even higher. However, the attitude of both the players and staff will enable them to push on in the future.”

He concluded, “I would like to thank everyone involved at the club and wish them all the best for the future”
