Llanelli Town snap up former Cardiff City shot-stopper Scott Coughlan

Llanelli Town have signed former Cardiff City goalkeeper Scott Coughlan, despite spending time on trial with Aberystwyth and Carmarthen Town this summer.

The youngster’ contract at the Bluebirds expired this summer and it was reported that Hull City had first option on signing the goalkeeper, after he spent time on trial at the Tigers in March of this year.

However, a move never materialised and the player was taken on trial by Welsh Premier League outfit Aberystwyth Town by then manager Tony Pennock.

Pennock was then recruited by new Hull manager Leon Slutsky to be part of his first team backroom staff ahead of the 2017/18 Championship campaign, and was replaced by former Bangor City manager Neville Powell.

Coughlan is a Wales U19 international and was part of the young Dragons side that won the Victory Shield a number of years ago.

The Cardiff City website described Coughlan as “a well-rounded, confident young goalkeeper with sound handling skills and good decision-making skills under pressure.”

The former Wales Under-19 international didn’t sign a deal with the Black and Greens, but has now struck a deal to join Andy Hill’s side ahead of their return to Welsh Football League Division One, after their title win last season.

The young shot stopper faces stiff competition for the number one shirt from long serving Reds goalkeeper Craig Morris, who has been a key member of the Llanelli playing staff for a number of years.

Llanelli began their season against Taffs Well at home on Friday, securing a 5-2 victory over the away side in which Coughlan made his debut for Andy Hill’s men.
