Table-topping Goytre United travel to Stebonheath Park this Saturday to face Llanelli Town in the sternest test of their title credentials so far this season.
One man pivotal to the early season success at Glenhafod Park is summer signing Thomas Walters. Walters joined from Caerau following an impressive 2016/17 campaign with the Maesteg based outfit, scoring over 30 goals in the process and while he admits he may not get as many this season the forward has set himself a target.
“At the start of every season I set myself a personal target. Last season I got that target of 30 goals but obviously stepping up this year it’s not quite 30 goals but is something I believe I can achieve.”
Along with Walters, other new signings were made over the summer in the shape of Jamal Roberts and Curtis Hutson and it hasn’t taken long for the new players to integrate with the squad.
“The manager has worked hard in pre-season to assemble a new squad of players and all the new lads have gelled really well. There’s a great buzz in the dressing room and hopefully we can keep the run going on Saturday.”
After scoring on his debut in the 6-1 rout of Afan Lido Walters has continued to impress at his new club and the striker is clearly relishing the challenge at the higher level.
“I’ve found the step up really challenging but I’ve loved it so far and I’m glad that I’m pushing myself to the next level. I’m working hard for the team and I’m glad that it’s paying off.”
Whilst many have been surprised by United’s early season form, Walters is quick to acknowledge the good start needs to be maintained if his team are to be thought of as genuine title contenders.
“I think it’s way too early in the season to even think about contending for the title. We’ve started really well but if we don’t keep working hard every week, we know we will come unstuck.”
Goytre go into the game as the only team in the Division with a 100% record but Llanelli will be looking to get back to winning ways following a 1-3 reverse away at Haverfordwest last weekend.
“All the boys can’t wait for this fixture. We go game by game but there is always an eye out for the big local matches. We know it will be a tough match as they have quality all over the pitch but we will be ready and prepared for the challenge that awaits.”
The United faithful will be hoping Walters and the rest of his team – mates can bring back the glory days of the mid – late 2000s which saw the club lift the Welsh League Division One title three times in five seasons and on this form few would bet against them challenging at the top of the table come the end of the season.
