Arnor and Eidur Gudjohnsen were the first to do it in 1996, but now the Gwent County League has a father-son duo.
And the best part about it? They share the same name AND the same birthday.
38-year-old Billy Evans Sr plays alongside his 18-year-old son Billy Evans Jr, for Gwent County League Division Two side Marshfield.
Billy Evans Snr said: “It’s really special to play alongside your son I can hang my boots up now,”
I started to play for Marshfield since I was 15 and there has been no other club I would play for.”
Marshfield are currently top of the sixth tier league, having finished second from bottom last season.
Billy Evans Sr’s involvement in the club came before Jr was even born. He turned out for the club 23 years ago. And he’s experienced it all, having captained the side to promotion to the Gwent County League in 2001/2002, before suffering relegation.
A long-term captain of the club, having been given the armband at the age of 17 and trusted sidekick of Marshfield boss Ian Summers, Snr has been a stalwart at the club.
So it came as no surprise when Billy Evans Jnr joined the club, playing for the youth team from the age of 12. He’s
Billy Evans, Sr’s brother Adam Evans is also at the club, having spent eight years with Marshfield, making it even more of a family affair at Wellfield Street.
Jnr is currently fourth in the top goalscorer charts in the Division, playing in a more attacking role.
Snr, on the other hand, is the one providing both his son and the other Marshfield attackers, playing in central midfield. Brother Adam plays as a full-back.
When asked who is the better player out of father and son, Snr added: “He is more of a forward and I was more a central midfielder of a defender so we will say him!”
Billy Evans Junior recently featured and scored for Ynysddu Welfare’s youth side in their heroic FAW Youth Cup victory over Briton Ferry Llansawel.
