The Neath & District Football League have followed their counterparts in Carmarthenshire to cancel the 2020/21 football season writes Jonathan Twigg.
Phil Hockin, Secretary of the League which was formed in 1931 and has 6 Senior Divisions with 32 Member clubs, a total of 64 teams with the addition of reserve teams contacted their member Clubs on Friday to clearly state the unfortunate scenario.
“Every season approximately 1,450 players register with our member clubs to enjoy the great game of football. This current season we have 34 registered Referee’s and the Executive committee made a decision in our meeting on Thursday night, that due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, where there seems to be no decrease in the numbers testing positive for the virus, we made the reluctant decision to cancel the season. “
He went further to explain, “Even if the Welsh Government review their guidelines at the end of the month, there is no guarantee of a return to football.
“We decided it would be in everyone’s best interests to begin our preparations for the 2021/22 season in the hope we see a return to the game we all love.”
Following the Neath & District League announcement, the West Glamorgan Junior League quickly followed suit, to announce the remainder of their season would be curtailed due to the ongoing Covid-19 issues.
