The magic of Lee Trundle was enough to see Llanelli Town through to the Third Round of the Welsh Cup in an entertaining 2-3 victory away to Taff’s Well on Friday night in front of a large crowd.
Welsh League Division Two leaders Llanelli travelled east full of confidence after a league cup win over STM last Saturday that had included a spectacular hat-trick from the former Swansea favourite. But First Division Taff’s Well were far from overawed in the opening stages and their own flair player Leon Jeanne produced a piece of magic on the left wing to create the game’s opening goal for Simon Prangley.
Trundle and his strike partner Jordan Follows caused the Wellmen problems throughout the first half and it was Trundle who equalised for the west Wales side late in the half, squeezing the ball between keeper and post when it looked impossible.
The home side regained their lead after the break when Leon Jeanne followed up after his penalty was parried, but once again they were soon undone by the visitors’ talisman, Trundle turning in the box to equalise again. His third goal, which proved to be the winner, was the best of all, with a turn that wrong-footed the defence and a shot across goal that crept inside the far post.
Taff’s Well pushed for an equaliser for the rest of the game and further chances came at both ends – but they there was no denying that Lee Trundle’s audacious skills made all the difference and earned the Reds their place in the last 32.
