Rhyl manager Niall McGuinness signs new contract

Manager of Rhyl FC Niall McGuinness has signed a new contract at the club, confirming he’ll be in the role until summer 2018.

The contract extension comes after Rhyl have exceeded expectations under McGuinness, who has guided them to eighth just three points off the top six and into the last 16 of the JD Welsh Cup.

McGuinness’ appointment in early 2015 made waves around the UK as he was aged just 24 at the time.

In the 2015/16 season Rhyl finished 11th in the relegation zone, but were saved from relegation due to Port Talbot’s demotion after they failed to retain a FAW domestic license.

Speaking to Rhyl FC’s official website, Rhyl FC’s managing director Mike Jones said:

“Niall fully understands how the club operates behind the scenes and appreciates the hard work and dedication of the volunteers to fight to keep this club alive. His passion, commitment and determination to Rhyl Football Club has added strength to our cause and together we will succeed.

“Niall has produced some positive results and performances this season under limited financial resources and has assembled a hungry young team of players willing to play and fight for the badge of the Lilywhites!

“Over the last few months the squad has seen local North Wales players given an opportunity and a focus on young talent with 9 of the 11 starters in the JD Welsh Cup match being under the age of 25 with many having established themselves from playing youth football across the region.

“Mike stated that the decision to offer the contract had been endorsed fully by the Board and added that “the board and myself wish Niall all very the best for the rest of the season, ‘Together Stronger!”

McGuinness’ first game under his new contract is one vital to top six qualification against struggling Newtown AFC, taking place on Saturday 10 December at the Corbett Sports Stadium  for a 3:00pm kick off.
