Fairwater’s Welsh Cup debut resulted in a hammering from Welsh Football League outfit Chepstow Town.

Chepstow managed by former Newport County defender Darren Jones, sat third in Division Three, put the Cardiff Combination League side to the sword.

The Cardiff based side conceded just the two goals in the first half, where Fairwater remained competitive, but the hosts turned on in the style in the second half.

They were the second team from the Cardiff Combination League to lose, after Aberystwyth Exiles crushing 8-1 defeat to Treharris Athletic Western.

It was a quick start for Chepstow and the Fairwater defence was breached early on. Ben Thompson rolled the ball in the net with the games first shot on target.

Fairwater had a chance to equalise. Elliot May put a free-kick over the top to James Fish and his shot sailed just over the bar.

Jac Coles went close for the Cardiff side too, as he had two opportunities. One was a long throw, where he stretched his leg, to flick a shot over the bar. The next was an overhead kick, which was just wide of Ian Vaughan’s goal.

The gulf in class wasn’t evident early on, with Daniel Noyes making a number of a well-timed challenge on Chepstow Town attacker Callum Dark, as he tried to double his side’s lead.

Darren Jones’ side was looking good on the counter-attack though, with Fairwater forced to defend.

Chepstow doubled their lead in similar fashion to their opening goal. Scott Freeman was found in space and he scored with a low finish past Charles.

It was against the run of play, with Fairwater enjoying more of the ball but Chepstow showed their clinical edge before halftime.

Freeman didn’t have to wait long for a second after the break. Just three minutes in, he took the ball round Jason Charles for his sides third.

In an attempt to reduce the deficit, Ryan Howells lined up a free-kick which whistled just past the post.

Scott Lovell grabbed Chepstow’s third not long after, as Charles couldn’t keep it out.

The Monmouthshire side were really finding their verve and Ieuan Evans was found unmarked just before the hour, slotting home with a smart finish to make it five.

Daniel John was forced to concede a penalty for a foul on Ieuan Evans. Ieuan Evans stepped up and drilled his penalty into the corner of the goal.

The only downside of Chepstow’s day was he injury to Josh Parsons, as Darren Jones substituted himself on.

Evans almost furthered his tally, but for a save with the leg of Charles.
