S4C and Sgorio to continue domestic coverage for a further four years

S4C’s flagship football show Sgorio will continue to show domestic Welsh football for another four years.

The Welsh language channel has reached an agreement with the Football Association of Wales to continue showing Welsh Football action such as the JD Welsh Premier League, JD Welsh Cup, Nathaniel MG Cup, as well as the Irn-Bru Cup.

Games will be continue to be shown shown on television, online platforms such as the S4C and Sgorio home page, as well as on Facebook Live. The new deal means that they will be able to broadcast up to 33 live matches every year from the 2018/2019 season to the end of the 2021/2022 season.

Sue Butler, S4C’s Sports Commissioner said “We are delighted to continue our relationship with the FAW and the JD Welsh Premier League, to bring unrivalled coverage of top flight Welsh football,”

“Sgorio’s live coverage remains at the heart of S4C’s sports portfolio and plays an important role in attracting viewers to our channel. Our online-only match coverage has been a popular addition among fans this season and we hope our audience for these matches will continue to grow over the next four years.”

In addition to the new deal, the channel’s midweek magazine show, Mwy o Sgorio has been comissioned for a further series. It has included content involving the domestic game in Wales, as well as featuring Wales internationals such as Chris Gunter, David Brooks and Ethan Amphadu.

Over the course of the season, Sgorio’s coverage have amassed an impressive 630,000 viewers across the United Kingdom on television, whilst they’ve attracted a futher 415,000 viewers on their online platforms, via BBC iPlayer and the Sgorio Facebook Live account.

“Their coverage of Welsh football is second to none, and has certainly raised the profile and awareness of the domestic game. We look forward to another four years of excellent coverage and commitment to the game in Wales.”

Sgorio’s next live match will be this seasons JD Welsh Cup final, between Aberystwyth Town and the Connah’s Quay Nomads, at Newtown’s Latham Park on Sunday afternoon. Coverage of the final will begin at 14:15, with English commentary available.
