Hudson enjoying seeing Brymbo as Number One at Christmas in Premier Division
Brymbo manager Phil Hudson says he’s enjoying seeing his side top of the tree at Christmas as he reflects on the season so far.
Hudson’s men marked a great 2018 following promotion last season, by beating Rhostyllen in horrific conditions with an impressive eight goals scored to ensure top spot in the Premier Division.
The result meant that the divisional newsboys would go into the festive period with a four-point gap over relegated Queens Park Rangers with two games in hand.
Hudson said: ”Being top at Christmas is great but no matter what time of the year it is to be top of a very competitive league is fantastic.
When it’s Christmas and we are nearly halfway through the league campaign it’s nice to be top of the tree.”
Being top at Christmas can sometimes be used as a cliche or looked at as a meaningless statistic, but in this case, we’re almost at the half-way stage.
Brymbo had the experience of being the pacesetters last season as they topped Division One and will find themselves in a similar situation, as they are now the team with the target on their back, as each team comes to claim a scalp off the league leaders.
“If teams play the league leaders, they have a little bit more fire in the belly so we have to respect teams no matter where they lie in the table and do a professional job.
“We are now the team to catch and we have to live with that added pressure and continue to play the way we have done prior to the break.”
Having won Division One last season, Brymbo are holding their own against teams who have been there or thereabouts for the last number of years.
Queens Park were playing in the Cymru Alliance last season, whilst Brickfield Rangers have been chasing promotion for a number of years now.
Corwen are also contenders, given their strong recruitment policy, which includes former Bangor City player Sam Henry.
It’s a very good division where a lot of teams are capable of taking points off each other.
“Winning breeds confidence and we knew the side we had was more than capable of improving as a squad.
We added a couple of new signings and lost a few lads but overall we improved the squad and the belief was there to see on day one.
We have such a close group the team spirit is through the roof and with all this you have a better chance of winning games of football which has been seen in the opening half of the season.
“Brickfield are they only team to beat us in the league.
“Corwen, Saltney and Queen’s Park have all given us good games and we have done well to come away with nine points from them and they will all continue to battle on and will all believe they can get promoted as there is a long way to go yet.”
Next season, Tier Two of Welsh football will be governed by the Football Association of Wales.
They have created a Northern and Southern Championship division. Should Brymbo win promotion and obtain the Tier Two licence, they will take part in the first ever FAW Championship.
A number of teams have won a tier three title in North Wales over the years and haven’t taken the opportunity of promotion, but Brymbo is a club that is readying themselves should they achieve their targets.
“We have already applied for promotion and put grant requests in for the work that needs doing regarding seats and dugouts.”
