Cefn Druids midfielder Alec Mudimu has been awarded the Zimbabwe Sports Person of the Year in the 2018 Zimbabwe Young Achievers Awards, following a successful year for both club and country.
The midfielder has been an influential figure for the JD Welsh Premier League outfit and his country this year, and was recognised in the awards ceremony last night.
Mudimu joined the Druids in the summer of 2017, after playing his trade with Stalybridge Celtic in the English system.
In his first year with the Ancients, the midfielder was a central figure for Huw Griffiths’ men as they made a surprise charge for European qualification.
The club managed to qualify for the UEFA Europa League following victory over Cardiff Met at the Rock in the JD Welsh Premier League European Play-off final.
Mudimu’s success at club level saw him receive his first national team call up back in March as Zimbabwe played in a four team Southern African tournament on the back of three goals in four appearances in February.
He sustained his club form and continued to feature for the national team throughout 2018, and subsequently was nominated for the award.
Mudimu was nominated alongside Admiral Muskwe, Muzzy Nduna, Tawanda Chipadza, Sean Mhende and Tanya Muzinda for the Sports Person of the Year, in a shortlist announced back in November.
The event was held in Coventry last evening, as Mudimu was presented with the award.
