Ynys Môn’s Tomos Clarke says the Island can challenge for Gold in the upcoming Inter-Island games.
The island of Ynys Môn will be coming up against sides like Jersey, Orkney and the Western isles.
With the Island Games taking place in Gibraltar, the football has been moved to Ynys Mon, who are aiming to host their own games in the future.
Clarke who has been named in Campbell Harrison’s squad for the Games, says the hosts are in it to win it.
“It’s great to see the island getting so much attention. There is much excitement about the island games coming to Anglesey.
“I feel we can definitely be challenging for the gold medal. “The quality we have in the squad is great.
“We have exciting players going forward who can create problems for the opposition.
“We all want to get to the final and bring gold home for the island.”
Clarke will be one of Ynys Môn’s most recognised players, having previously been in the books of Oldham.
He was previously with Colwyn Bay, who have since returned to the Welsh pyramid system.
The midfielder already has experience though of winning trophies in Ynys Mon.
Clarke was with Glantraeth when they won a League and Cup double.
His experience alongside players who have had a taste of the Welsh Premier League will make for a blend of experience for the games.
“It’s a great honour to be selected for the island games. The island has a lot of quality players and the squad we have proves that.
The squad would be more than capable of competing in the Championship.
“We have a good variety of lads who have played at the highest level in the Welsh Premier League but also young lads with great quality who are more than capable of playing at a high standard.
Having played at Oldham I know the pressures surrounding big games. I don’t feel pressure going into games.
“I like to remain relaxed and go and enjoy the game and support my team to get the result we want.”
Having suffered relegation with Holyhead Hotspur in what a gruelling season, many players would be allowed a break, given their involvement in a summer tournament.
However Clarke won’t be using his participation in the Inter-Island games as an excuse to miss any pre-season preparations with his new club Conwy Borough.
As soon as the week-long tournament is over, he’ll be back in the swing of things with the Tangerines.
“Once the tournament begins it will be demanding playing everyday but we’ve worked hard to get fit for the tournament.
“When the tournament finishes I won’t be looking for a break, I’m looking to go straight into pre-season the week after with Conwy and keep my fitness levels high and keep myself sharp.”
Campbell Harrison’s side begins the Inter-Island games tomorrow when they host the Western Isles at Holyhead Hotspurs’ ground.
