Plas Madoc to fold as a result of COVID-19 and FAW restructuring

Wrexham club Plas Madoc have announced they’re to fold as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic and the FAW’s restructuring.

The Cefn Mawr based side are calling it a day after just three years of existence.

A lack of fundraising opportunities due to the pandemic and the restructuring of the Welsh domestic pyramid have been cited as the reasons for their demise.

A club statement announcing the decision read: “It is with great sadness we must announce the committee’s decision to fold the club,

The decision has no been taken lightly and is based on both the financial implications of the current pandemic and the pyramid structure of the FAW.

COVID-19 has put a huge strange on our club finances, having not played a game since the beginning of March and being unable to fundraise for the coming season.

Our main income has always been our community fundraising which has not been permitted over the summer.

The club were certain for relegation from the third tier after not applying for the necessary Tier Three Certificate.

This was despite a 12th-placed finish in their final season, the highest placing in their history.

“Even with the hard work to secure funding to sustain ourselves, we are still unable to keep the club active due to players.

We have come into problems with sustaining a full squad due to the FAW Pyramid Structure.

“We cannot offer the FAW’s ideals to players registering with us and we are unable to offer promotions to higher leagues due to ground criteria and finances.”

During their short existence, they were once ranked the best non-league team in the United Kingdom.

In just their second season, they claimed the Division One title in the Wrexham League, going the entire league campaign unbeaten.

The Plassey also reached the Quarter-Finals of the FAW Trophy and claimed the Division One League Cup.
