Welsh goalkeeper David Cornell set to sign for Ipswich Town – reports

Ipswich Town are reportedly in pole position to sign Welsh goalkeeper David Cornell. 

Cornell is on the lookout for a new club after leaving Northampton, following four years of service with the Cobblers.

Portman Road looks to be the destination for the Waunarlwydd-born shot-stopper as he joins his eighth club.

The East Anglian Daily Times say Cornell has agreed to a move to the Suffolk-based side. 

He held positive talks at their training ground over a two-year deal, with an option for a third year.

The announcement of his move is set to be in the coming days. 

Scouts from the Tractor Boys had been paying close attention to the former Port Talbot Town loanee and now they look to have got their man.

Cornell is moving on from Northampton after helping them to promotion last season.

The 29-year-old didn’t feature in the League Two play-offs last year but did play 34 times in the campaign, keeping 12 clean sheets and only conceding 29 goals. 

Cornell’s reason for his departure, was discussed by his former mnager Keith Curle, who said: “Without going into the details, in my opinion, Dai needed a new challenge. 

“That’s a conversation I had with him and fair play to him because a lot of things we spoke about, he agreed with.

“Potentially, Dai could go and play at a higher level and compete at a higher level but I think the timing was right for him as an individual to go and test himself in new surroundings.”

The former Swansea City academy goalkeeper could face his former side with the two in League One next season.
