Pembrokeshire Football League cancels 2020/21 season

The Pembrokeshire Football League have opted to cancel the 2020/21 season, due to the uncertainty of the current COVID-19 situation.

Council members of the league which is based in the West of Wales, have brought to an end any plans for any competitive football in the region.

A number of leagues in Wales have already taken the decision to cancel their seasons, with Pembrokeshire League the latest.

Confirming the decision, a statement from the league read:“After taking into account club replies, the current COVID-19 situation, and the likelihood of further extensions of the lockdowns, it was resolved that there will be no competitive football this season in Pembrokeshire at Senior or Junior level. There will also be no organised mini football fixtures for this season.

“Should clubs wish to play friendlies, when the restrictions are lifted, and subject to COVID-19 regulations, they are free to do so, subject to the authorisation of the League, as previously. Stay safe everyone, and hopefully we can restart in August.”

Friendly matches may be allowed to take place, however training of amateur football clubs has not been permitted since mid December.

No competitive football in the Welsh pyramid has taken place since the latest round of Cymru Premier fixtures, which took place on December 19.

A suspension of Wales’ men and women’s top divisions has been in affect since the country went into Level Four restrictions.

Despite the seven-day rolling case rate for Wales being less than 300 cases per 100,000 people, Health Minister Vaughan Gething, predicts no significant easing of rules.

As a result, it remains unlikely that the Cymru Leagues and Welsh Premier Women’s League will resume until the alert level is lowered.
