Wales’ Anna Filbey still training with Tottenham despite Celtic loan move

Welsh international Anna Filbey is still training with Tottenham despite agreeing to join Celtic on loan.

The 21-year-old sealed her loan move to Celtic on February 2 but has been unable to travel to Scotland as women’s football is suspended in the country.

The Scottish Women’s Premier League was initially suspended for three weeks on 11 January but has remained suspended since.

“I haven’t been up there yet, they’re still on a break because of the coronavirus”, she said.

“The next announcement from the government is on March 1, so we are just waiting on that to get the get-go.

“I’m still training with Tottenham to keep fit because they’re [Celtic] not even training yet.”

Filbey’s last game came back in December 2020, playing 90 minutes at center-back as Tottenham beat Brighton 3-1 in the WSL.

With Abbie McManus’s arrival at Tottenham on loan from Manchester United, the young defender, who can also play in midfield, was sent to Scotland to gain more first-team football.

She also couldn’t turn down an opportunity to work with Celtic manager, Fran Alonso.

“I knew Fran Alonso previously he was the old Lewes manager and I’ve played against his team.

“I really like his style of play, they are very much a possession team and I’m a player that loves being on the ball.

“That really attracted me to Celtic and the chance to challenge for Champions League spots and even the title.”

With the Scottish government currently set to announce an update on the suspension of Women’s football on March 1, Filbey will return to train with Tottenham following Wales camp and will have to remain patient as she waits to join up with her new team.
