Cambrian & Clydach Vale and Trefelin BGC could not be separated as the two played out to an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Cymru South.
Roan Piper put Trefelin in front and Ryan Prosser missed a penalty in the first-half but Sam Jones scored two goals in four minutes to put the Sky Blues in front. Jamie Latham restored parity and David Thomas was red carded in a match not lacking in action.
Richie Ryan’s sides remain unbeaten in the league since May 2018 whilst Cambrian continue their unbeaten start.
The game began with both sides at full throttle as each looked to put down an early marker in what was already anticipated to be a good spectacle.
Craig Wilcox, who has enjoyed a good start to life in Clydach Vale went near to scoring an early goal. He was found by Sam Jones but his laced effort moved past the post.
In an attack not long after, Ceri Morgan then put the ball in the net as Wilcox found him but he was adjudged to have handled the ball.
A key chance came Prosser’s way who was found by Wilcox but from six yards out he fired his shot over the bar.
Against the run of play, Tref took the lead and it came through Piper, who has now netted five goals in senior football. The 16-year-old smacked a shot from 25-yards leaving Cameron Clarke statuesque as he could only watch on from his goal-bound effort.
In response, the busy Wilcox forced Keenan Bailey into a low save on his far side, as he searched for a third goal in the colours of Cambrian.
Damon Thomas had a good chance to double as a quickly taken free-kick saw Thomas’ powerful effort cannon off the crossbar after Latham’s pass.
Less than ten minutes before half-time, Cambrian spurned a good chance to equalise by missing a penalty. Wilcox had gone down and Prosser stepped up but his slow spot-kick was easy pickings for Bailey.
The second half had the same pace as the first with Chris Jones forcing Clarke to save at his near post after being played in by Latham.
Sam Jones brought Cambrian back into the game having seen Trefelin go near to a second. The winger broke into the box and placed his shot underneath the goalkeeper.
Moments later, Jones had a second and it came in fortuitous fashion. An easy cross was spilled by Bailey and Jones was there to pounce, drilling home his ninth of the campaign.
After the hour mark, Trefelin tied things up again having trailed for the first time. Cutting inside the box, Latham dinked Clarke with an accurate chip, sparking jubilant scenes amongst the passionate away crowd.
The wind was in Trefelin’s sails and they were boosted by a red card for David Thomas. Thomas had fouled Latham and the referee had no hesitation but to dismiss him.
Wilcox continued to tirelessly work as an attacking full-back and put a good ball to substitute Liam Edwards but his shot was somehow misdirected from the target.
Cambrian then had to defend as Latham’s low-placed shot was cleared off of the line by Ceri Morgan.
Trefelin then hit the post as Latham again caused problems, forcing a save before Jordan Davies’ curling shot hit the woodwork.
Neither side could really challenge in stoppage time with a drawn the deserved result for both given the showing they had both put on.
