Llantwit Major 1-0 Carmarthen Town: Major deal with heat of title race with sixth straight win

Llantwit Major made it six straight wins after a 1-0 win over Carmarthen Town at Prince Moomin’s Palace. One goal was enough to separate two of the form teams of the division.

Conner Goldsworthy with the only goal of a tightly fought match in the JD Cymru South. Goldsworthy’s first half strike was enough for the win despite the visitors putting the leaders under heavy pressure in the second half.

The win puts Llantwit seven points clear of title rivals Pontypridd Town. Carmarthen remain in sixth but now five points behind fifth placed Goytre.


Llantwit went for an attack from the kick off with Anthony Rawlings pumping the ball into the box. Kris Evans was looking to get on to it but the flag was up.

The early going was quick paced and back and fourth as Carmarthen looked to put the ball into the box. Adam John was able to get a head onto it but Adam Caswell was able to clear for Llantwit.

Llantwit almost caught Carmarthen out with a quick break away. Thomas Walters starting and finishing the move but his shot was blocked and Carmarthen were able to clear.

Jaime Rickard worked his way out wide and put the ball into the Llantwit six yard box. Caswell was alive and quickly got down on the ball before Carmarthen had a shooting chance.

Rawlings found Walters on the edge of the box and the Llantwit striker fired a shot that needed a decent save from Ifan Knott.

Just past the half hour mark and the home side made the breakthrough. Quick passing across the pitch saw Walters find the run of Conner Goldsworthy on the left. Goldsworthy then fired emphatically into the bottom corner.

Carmarthen had a chance to level just before the break when Liam Thomas headed just wide from a cross into the box.

Carmarthen came out in the second half and were able to push Llantwit back inside their half. Llantwit seemed happy to play on the counter and allow Carmarthen large spells with the ball.

A free kick was sent into the box by Carmarthen only to be headed away by Kris Evans. The ball came out to Rickard who fired a shot at goal that was blocked.

Carmarthen were trying to put the ball into the box at every opportunity. Rickard was again the recipient in the box but with his back to goal his over head kick went over.

Carmarthen were really pushing to find an equaliser but too often their cross’ were met by Evans and Sean Williams.

Adam John hit a shot on the turn that forced a good save from Caswell as he turned the ball away from goal.

Carmarthen kept pressing and pressing but Llantwit’s defenders kept clearing the ball away.

As the game went into added time Llantwit tried to keep the ball in the Carmarthen half as the visitors desperately tried to get forward. Llantwit however were able to see out the final minutes and pick up the win.
