Clinical Newtown take changes to edge out Haverfordwest County

Newtown extended their winning streak to four league wins in a row with a 2-0 victory over fellow in-form side Haverfordwest County at Latham Park.

With every other game in the Cymru Premier being postponed, all eyes were on Chris Hughes and Tony Pennock’s men.

The Robins had the better of the chances in the first half. Nick Rushton played a fantastic through ball to Ryan Sears who should’ve taken the shot on, however his attempted backheel pass was intercepted by the Haverfordwest defence.

Chances were few and far between for Haverfordwest and those that they did have seemed to always find their way into the hands of the goalkeeper.

Newtown broke the deadlock after Aaron Williams played a fantastic ball through to Nick Rushton, who showed fantastic composure and awareness to square the ball to Nigel Aris who slotted the ball home nicely.

Shane Sutton came close to doubling their lead, but he guided his header just wide of the post.

A late flurry of chances in the first half from Haverfordwest wasn’t enough to bring the visitors level before the break.

The Bluebirds showed great fighting spirit in the second half. Captain Corey Shephard was unlucky as his deflected effort was only able to find the face of the post. Rhys Abbruzzese’s curling effort was very well held by Jones in the Newtown goal.

Newtown secured the three points deep into the second half. Aaron Williams did fantastic hold off his man and slide through Robles who found Rhys Hesden lurking at the back post to tap into an empty net.

The Robins’ first clean sheat since August ensured that they moved into the top six.
